View Full Version : How do you show that you're a gamer

This is a question that I've been wondering about for a while: How do you show off that you're a gamer. Do you wear anything or act a certain way that shows you're a gamer?

For myself I have a "King of Games" shirt from the Nintendo store in New York that I wear to important gaming events (because it needs to be washed by hand and I don't want to damage it by wearing it too much). I carry a Hellsing bag and wear a Behelit necklace from the Berserk anime series. I'm also generally playing DS.. sometimes even while walking ^_^

Anime or other type of fans, feel free to add your input.

I don't "show off" that I'm a gamer on purpose... I mean that's kinda lame. I wear a lot of game clothes because I like them and don't give a F what anyone thinks. My favorite is by far the Zelda shirt I picked up at Nintendo Store (but can now be found in Walmarts around the country). I swear... I've never had so many people stop and talk to me because of a shirt. I'm as good as married and all, but this shirt is a total CHICK MAGNET. Popped collar polos have NOTHING on it!! I also have a hat that has Nintendo written in Kanji. Always a conversation piece whenever I come across asian folks...

But other than that, I usually arrange my living quarters to display/surround myself in my gaming collection. Posters, wallscrolls are obvious, but console boxes also work nicely. I'd say the only time I ever get embarassed is when my parents visit; because they can never believe how much money I can spend on "stupid games"...

oh and a Hellsing bag? I know they're quite common... but then again I might have seen you at the Japanese matsuri when I was still living in Montreal this summer...

It's in my basement where all my games are. I got new stands and shelves and stuff for my stuff so please disregard the general ghettoness of my gaming area.

I talk about games...I 'll either bring them up or join in when my friends are talking about them, but I don't forcefully make it the topic or anything if people are talking about something else.

A couple years ago, back in high school, I'd used to take french class. You'd have to do presentations, and alot of mine were shameless homages to gaming culture - whether it's presenting Metroid Prime as video footage collected from a space research mission, playing GT2 on my PSone or using Initial D for inspiration for a driving segment. I also have a couple gaming related t-shirts, as well.

Yeah, I'm not sure I get the point of this thread. I'm really into sports, but do I have to make a point of making sure other people know that? I'm a heterosexual but do I have to make sure other people know that too?

I play and own a crapload of different games, but I wouldn't be caught dead in video game related apparel and I'm not sure I care if people know I play video games or not. It is totally cool if you want to and I respect that, but I don't feel I have to advertise my likes or dislikes to people in public.

Anyway, I don't really show anything that would label me a gamer clothes-wise, but if you came into my room and saw my collection, it would be obvious.

Much like any other hobby I'm into, I find little reason to show I'm any of it. It's a hobby, not a definition of life. If someone asks me about a game I know something of, I'll tell them, or not tell them. Besides, I dont care for most people who consider themselves gamers much as I dont care much for those who consider themselves american otaku. I do decorate my room with various gaming and anime related stuff though. My room, why shouldnt I?

Let's the say when driving down the freeway down there on the way to Florida, my family and I got a couple weird stares. They don't seem all that friendly in some parts! (maybe they were just like "Oooh Canadians!" and not what people stereotypically say.)

Now that I think about it, I don't wear my gamer clothes all that much anymore. I guess I just stopped caring, or something.

Kinda the same with me. People think I'm a lot of things. I've been called emo, jock, that gay friend, and the guy who's just there. Only ones that immediately come to mind that I've been called.

Now that I think about it, I don't wear my gamer clothes all that much anymore. I guess I just stopped caring, or something.
Yeah, that's been happening to me to.

I play games?

This.

It's not like I expressly advertise that I play games, but I won't deny it if people ask me about it, and I certainly do play my DS in public if I feel like playing and I'm just sitting around somewhere. I have t-shirts with Mario and Megaman and Pacman and whatever on them, but I treat them like any other shirt. My room is covered in game parephenalia and my computer desktop at work has SMT art on it but I don't shove it in people's faces or anything. It's my hobby and I love it, but I don't feel the need to shout it form the rooftops or anything.

And yeah, people who call themselves "Otaku" and feel proud about it make me want to hit them upside the head. With an ice pick.

I really love the discussion and the different viewpoints I've gotten.

The reason I ask is because I'm a gamer and very proud of it. I would happily wear gamer t-shirts every day if I wasn't too cheap to pay $30 for a t-shirt. To me being a gamer is a big part of my identity as other than school/jobs/friends/my family gaming is what comes first.

I see lots of anime merchandise (when I go to conventions) but little gaming and was looking for different ideas. I'd also like to see more "gamer pride", though that's a debate that I don't want to bring up right now.

I consume mushrooms and plants, then I get real big and shoot sparks from my fingers.

Seriously though, I generally won't wear video game shirts in public unless they are done in a way that the average person doesn't know it's a video game shirt. Capcom's Dead Rising shirt was a great example, that was an awesome game shirt. It was light blue with a sort of punk print, and no obvious clue that it was for a game. I probably wouldn't wear a shirt with a picture of Mario.

I try my best to not look like a geek but also try to avoid looking like too much of a hipster or retro/subculture guy. I occasionally fail in both respects, mostly the latter due to my love for punk rock fashion. If any of the clothes from No More Heroes was made more accessible to me, I would purchase all of them.

I actually purchased that Megaman 9 box art shirt because I found it so damned funny. However, I haven't worn it yet and don't know if I will. Maybe if I go to a friends house who likes games, but I know I'll never wear it to the grocery store or anything like that.

In 25 years of gaming, it's the first time I've owned a gaming related article of clothing.

I snagged 2 of the MGS4 shirts UNIQLO put out while I was in Japan (guy with a box on his head and a nice collage of the Snakes from 1,2,and 3). I get tons of free shirts for games since I work at Gamestop, but they are usually XL (and I wear an M, maybe an L at most). Heck, I guess working at Gamestop is a way to show that I'm a gamer? I know many of you have complaints about stores in your area, but I have to say that in my neck of the woods, the full time staff know their stuff about games and play them frequently. Seasonal staff. . . not always.

However, I guess the best way for someone to figure out I'm a gamer is playing my DS or PSP out around town.

I once asked the manager of Game crazy how much for one of his posters. I also pre-order limited edition games. I have never bought clothing based on some game or company, My opinion is that they should be happy I bought their game in the first place.

@Balrog: Touche'. My on-line persona, while being entirely accurate to my RL personality, won't have any bearing on my prefessional or personal life. I'm comfortable enough with who I am internally so as not to feel compelled to express it through my outward appearance.

For example, all things being otherwise equal, if two guys show up to interview for a position with me, one in t-shirt/shorts and another in button-up shirt and pants, I'll hire the 2nd one 100% of the time. You'll be hard pressed to find many situations where that isn't true.

To be fair, the way you dress for a job interview and the way you dress when hanging out with friends doesn't have to match for most people. Also, for people college aged and younger, the button up shirt probably won't mean as much as clean urine if you are going to be a lifeguard or load trucks at a food transport company. I've been doing contract security for the past couple years while going to school, and when it comes time to renew my guard license or attend a meeting, they're lucky if my hair is a single color and my pants reach my ankles.

Perhaps, perhaps not. Dependant on the size of your community and penchant for moving, you never know when a potential future employer might be around. I can't count the number of times I've seen idiots wandering around the nearby campus who show up with degree in hand for a job in a year or two. You'd be suprised how readily people remember you when you intentionally make yourself stand out. Hey, do what you like however. Nobody ever really wants to take life advice from the experienced old man anyway, right? ;)

I'm a city boy, so I can't really speak for small towns. After college, I don't plan to get a job anywhere near my school. I don't think I could live my life dressed up never knowing if my future employer was watching me. I'm a little too Wu-Wei for that, if you know what I mean.

I'm a city boy as well. It was a bit of an extreme example, for sure, but I think it illustrated the point pretty well. Depending on what you want to be when you grow up, your outward appearance may mean a hell of a lot more than you'd like/want to believe. I don't do much to show it, but nor do I go out of my way to avoid it. I have a few shirts with game stuff on them, but they're just like every other shirt in my closet; I buy them because I like the design, not because I'm trying to send a specific message on them. (Like, that "ceci n'est pas une pipe" shirt they have at Threadless.com? Best gaming shirt ever.)

I imagine my co-workers have probably noticed the two of us who keep filching the Best Buy ads and going AAAAAH FALLOUT 3 ;_; when we're not otherwise occupied (I work at a newspaper, so we're surrounded by ads), but I don't get in people's faces with it.

If you walked into my house, on the other hand...yeah, you'd probably notice something. Figures on my desk, the odd poster on the wall, and I have been seriously considering making a nice big copy of the Nocturne fusion chart to post behind my TV, because it's utilitarian, dagnabbit. :| And it's not like anyone sets foot in my living room besides friends and occasionally my landlord, anyway.

Heck yes. Travis was an otaku in the game, but the clothes were cool.

I don't advertise that I am a gamer with clothing and such. Everyone knows that's who I am though because when the topic comes up, I turn into an encyclopedia of gamer knowledge and then it's hard to shut me up. I have a gaming related license plate, but most people don't know enough to read it the right way. I also have a Pac-Man lunchbox which I use to bring my lunch to work (it's a year older than I am actually), but everyone I work with seems to like it. I mean, nobody hates on Pac-Man.

The clothes didn't really reflect the geekiness though. I wouldn't mind wearing any of the Grasshopper shirts as the company isn't as well known as say, Sega or Nintendo. They also had T-shirts of his favorite fictional anime series, but the fact that it is sort of a general parody of anime genres makes it palatable to me.

I spend too much money on nice clothes not to wear them. I have a bunch of video game shirts, but most of them are too big. I'll usually wear them if i'm working out or if a girl needs something to sleep in.

Usually when people find out i'm a gamer, they're a bit suprised, but are actually even more respectful because they know I still take care of myself, try to look nice and professional despite what gaming can do to a person. I for the most part feel and act the same way towards others.

I think the main reason behind the size of the promo shirts is that your better off designing something too big that people can still wear. Where as if the shirt is too small, you're pretty much screwed.

I spend too much money on nice clothes not to wear them. I have a bunch of video game shirts, but most of them are too big. I'll usually wear them if i'm working out or if a girl needs something to sleep in.
Atlus, NISA, etc. should make their shirts smaller, longer, and with spaghetti straps for our special someones. <3

Like many others, the DS goes pretty much everywhere with me. I've even been on the clock at my jobs, and stop to take a moment to ask what games people are playing when I see others with DSes. (Unfortunately, all the answers I get are things like Brain Training or Pokemon... no Atlus games...) T-shirts, well... there's just so few that I like for reasonable prices. I would like (and wear) one of those yellow P4 ones, but CA's a tad far to go for one. I think the last gaming shirt I got was for... Mario 64? And that was a freebie from Nintendo...

(Of course, if you REALLY want to get ancient, if you remember the Nintendo fruit snacks, I did send in a blue princess...)

LOL, so did I. I don't think I got the shirt though.

In my case, showing my Onyx Black Nintendo DS that I got as a birthday gift for my 22nd birthday is enough; bringing my current entire line-up: 6 DS games, 4 GBA games

Atlus: Izuna, Rondo of Swords, Riviera ~the Promised Land
Konami: Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars
Capcom: Megaman ZX Advent, Breath of Fire II
Nintendo: Pokemon Diamond, Hotel Dusk Room 215, Pokemon Emerald

...is pushing it, no?

Other times I try to show it are done through:

--challenging some people I know in beatmania IIDX dj. battles
--constant discussion of Marvel VS Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes, and how much its sequel got reduced into a Cable fight >_>
--"(sic) so i herd u liek mudkipz" x3 ...or, asking people to trade their Feebas for a Chansey with Thunderbolt and Thunder for egg moves
--cheap characters in fighting games
--attention-whoring in arcades (via song play, of course)

I don't really show that I play games to anyone. Its kind of nerdy around here, mostly just kids play them. My DS is always in my bag though

I got this black PS2 t-shirt that Sony gave me when I bought my PS2.

That was 8 years ago. By now, that t-shirt is used to clean the windows in my house.

I don't have much to show, probably just my room. But that doesn't tell much because there's not much gaming posters here (too many Final Fantasy VII AC and Final Fantasy VIII posters. Oh, and let's not forget Naruto) and the good ones you order from EBay/Amazon run the risk of getting...destroyed by my custom officers before it is really delivered to me (particularly the sexy ones).

I'll be getting my PSP soon (in 8 weeks time), so I guess that counts.

I just wear my Nintendo hoodie to work... that's really it.
I have several animu shirts, but I can't wear them to work so... they just sit in my drawers and collect dust.

But, there are those who go *all out* and those people... they scare me. ._. I came across a guy dressed as a Prinny in GameStop. I don't know what was worse, the fact that I knew the guy or that his co-workers and customers had to deal with him. He pissed me off that day... can't remember why. But I do remember making fun of his costume and calling him all sorts of names. I felt better after that.

::coughs::
In any case, if I'm asked, I'll answer. I really don't flaunt my gaming pride. I just don't see the point in it.

If a prinny pissed me off in real life, I would probably remember it forever.
