View Full Version : Let's talk about Ys.

Here's my story:

I grew up with both a NES and a Turbo-Grafx 16, so I was already in on the whole NEC thing. I was subscribed to Turbo Play (I still have those somewhere) and the writers were raving pretty hard about this killer new (at the time) version of Ys with music so good, they couldn't put it into words.

So sometimes in the mid-nineties I worked at a game store and managed to scrap enough money to score a Turbo Duo along w/ Ys I, II and III (and Dracula X but that's another story). I still remember being blown away by the soundtrack like it was yesterday, and honest to gawd, I've never been this moved by a game score since then (OK Actraiser is up there too). It helps that the gameplay was particularly addicting as well, for a grinder such as I.

Since then I've just been raving and raving about the series (and Falcom as a company), went back and tried the Famicom and SMS versions of Ys I & II, also Ys III for the SNES (excellent port minus the CD music). Managed to get my hands on Ys IV; Dawn of Ys but never beat it until Nightwolve's patch a couple years ago. Still bummed about Ys V never being officially released (what a game!). Also played the Windows remakes to completion, those were breath-taking.

Of course when Konami translated Ys 6 I went nuts, did my best to force all of my friends into buying copies. I still think it's the best Action RPG on PS2, go out and find it if you don't own it already!! Highly recommended! Then there's the Oath in Felghana, which sorely deserves an official localization, but I guess it's too late for that. Ys Origins is more of the same, which for most people means a heck of a game. I'm just hoping that Atlus USA's sudden vested interest in the Ys series means good things for the recently announced Ys Seven!!!!!

So anyway, I know, tldr, wall of text. When did YOU start playing Ys?

I was a spoiled kid and had a turbo-grafx 16 with the CD attachment and played through the Ys Book 1 & 2 collection. It's one of the few video games my dad remembers since it was the first game we played that had voice. When I got the Atlus Faithful e-mail about the remake I told my dad "Remember that Ys game with the voices?", and he knew exactly what I'm talking about. I think Ys book 1 & 2 is the only game I've played through more than 10 times.

That means you bought your TGCD + games at Radio Shack since they were the only official distributors up in Canada ;)

Everytime the guys at my local store saw me pop in, they knew they were in for a sale!

I've played Ys Book 1 and 2 on the Virtual Console and Ys 3 on the SNES, and I didn't like any of them. I'd buy a soundtrack because the music IS pretty amazing and catchy, but honestly I just can't stomach the gameplay at all, it reminds me too much of Hydelide.

My parents would actually take trips down to the US to buy me games (Montreal is 1.5 hours from the border). I can't imagine living in the days without microplay and EB Games and Amazon!

Something just crossed my mind right now:

The announcement of Ys 1&2 is probably the best thing since sliced bread :)

I'm so glad you're picking this up, and that we won't have to pay $30 or $40 for each book separately. this is one of my favorite games of all time and i've played through it multipe times. first book 1 on the sega master system and then books 1 and 2 on the TG-16 CD. The music on the TG-16 CD was amazing, so i'm glad to hear that the music sounds much the same only rearranged, with similar instrument sounds used. there was a sort of house music/techno remix floating around on the net with a rip of the tg-16 CD and it would have been amazing to hear that music. i also remember seeing boxes for Ys 1 and 2 in pc versions.

i'm really excited that there will be new content included.

thanks atlus!

Okay, so I misunderstood Jeffx's request. He wanted a separate thread to talk about the Ys series and nostalgia type stuff. In a real roundabout way, a.k.a. sloppy mess, I made another thread. Sorry if this confused anyone.

I keep wanting to get Ark of Napishtum, but have always put it off (thought the demo was fun). Technically, the rerelease of the first two games will most likely be my first foray into the series.

jeffx

If you can, get your hands on it. Game should be dirt cheap on ebay. I guarantee it'll jump ahead of everything else in your gaming queue until you finish it.

I started playing them a couple years ago, when a friend of mine who is a huge Falcom nerd burned her copy of Ys I & II Eternal and mailed it to me. 9_9

I never did get around to getting a legit copy of Eternal, but I HAVE bought Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin, and two different copies of Ark of Napishtim.

Also, as a side note, one of my biggest pet peeves about the series is people misspelling it as "Y's" thanks to the typo that was on the original game's box years and years ago (second only to people pronouncing the game "Wise" instead of "Ees"). If anybody from Atlus is reading this thread, could you PLEASE fix the header on the official site so that it doesn't have the apostraphe? D:

D: D: D: D: D:

Don't even joke about that!

Seriously, though. Ys is a mythical city (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ys) in France. If you check one of the world maps that Falcom has put out, you'll see that the series actually takes place in Europe with the names of all the countries fantasy'd up a bit. :D

We need a thread to discuss the translations of various names, towns, etc. Probably too late to change the translations, but, it couldn't hurt:

Dahm should be Darm
Gohan the Bandit should be Goban
Reah could be Lair, but, I'm fine with Reah
Dark Pearl should be Black Pearl(that's what's used in ALL Ys games involving a Black Pearl aka a giant black Emel Stone)

Others that haven't been confirmed yet for this translation
Solomon Shrine
Dabbie
Dr. Klaus
Zava
Dalles
Raba
Luta Gemma(PLEASE don't call him Luther Gemma, or Ruther Jemma or etc.)
Cleria
Slaf
Roda
Jevah Toba
Rance Villiage
Zeptik or Zeptic Villiage
Rado's Annex
Ruins of Moondoria

I think there's more that have been translated wierdly, but, these are the ones I can think of at the moment, can anyone else think of anything?

thanks man, yeah yesterday this news just drove me insane, I barely did any work for the rest of the day. I'm cool now. I mean like I said, I played these games so many times (and I actually tried the japanese DS versions) the point is that I'm just happy Ys is getting some recognition on this side of the pacific.

And this just elevates Atlus' status as the _best_ USA publisher to... wait, they're already on top. So on that point, I'm very confused as to how to react. I'll somehow have to build an even taller pedestal to put them on.

Now about Ketsui Death Label...

What do you think of the Japanese ds versions? Im sorta worried about removal of tackling!.

I've always liked the Y's series.

I think the "tackling" was suppose to be your sword strike back in the day. They just couldn't animate it or something.

jeffx

you get used to it. it's kinda "floaty" at first. remember Lagoon for the SNES? Yeah, like that in a sense, but really not as bad. You just gotta learn the timing.

That's why I'd like to know if any substantial changes were made from the Japanese version. I guess we'll only know in February.

Sei
10-23-2008, 09:56 AM
Well, yeah. The enemy position, Adol's, your sword and shield, angle, facing, stats and speed you were moving at (I think) were all taken into account when tackling something. It represented a sqord crossing.. but for most purposes it looks like tackling the enemy :).

I sorta like the mechanic, too. It's mostly gone from y's 2 (bosses are fought with shooter like spells) and 3 has traditional buttons and is side scrolling.

Remember, there is no apostraphe in Ys. It's not plural.:agree:

And it's funny, I finally caved in & gave up on these 2 games coming over stateside, & tried to win them on ebay a couple months ago, but lost! Now I'm glad that I did! I never thought we'd see these over here. And, with the same token, am glad we won't be seeing Ys Strategy over here. I have the European version, so, it's in english, but, the only thing I like about it, is the music. I'd still like some kind of compilation pack of the PS2 Ys 1-5, even though, 3-5 weren't the greatest, maybe some kind of budget pack?

And, personally, I've noticed, what atleast seems to me, to be a good amount of interest in the Turbo version, over in the Wii section of Gamefaqs, so, I think the Turbo game, may have helped! I hope somehow we can get Felghana & Origin over here on PS3, not to mention Ys Seven. It'd also be great, if we got Zwei! & the Sora no Kiseki/Legend of Heroes 6 series for PSP over here!

I didn't have the opportunity to pick up YS I and II until recently because of the Virtual Console. I played it, and loved it. I'm not 100% sure that I'm going to pick up the DS version. I mean I haven't even finished part II all the way yet. I might just get it to show some more Ys support. God knows it needs it!

Heh. I do have a PC, and I can mostly read most basic moonspeak fluently :). I just make the point that that would be an awesome game to bring if Atlus had a chance. Best Y's game, I think.

Oath is pretty good too. Actually I think the same translator from IS was working on this.

Hitoshura
11-13-2008, 04:27 PM
Haha, yeah. Wow, I didn't know you were such an Ys fan.

As for Gemini working on it, that's the first I've heard of it. Would be awesome if he was though, I'm sure it would go much faster than the IS patch.

You'd think that Orign & Felghana were popular enough, that someone would've already ported them to the PS2/3 by now, like Konami did with Ark, & I'm still hoping that will happen, maybe atleast for the PSP. I can say at the very least, Falcom is doing their own games for PSP now, so, maybe that'll give us a better chance of seeing more Ys outside Japan.

swordsmanofred
11-17-2008, 12:00 AM
I am a little worried that this DS version is getting released here since I heard Ys I and Ys II DS versions (which were released in Japan not too long ago) were horrible. I can't help but feel that Falcom needs just one really awesome game to be released in America for its popularity to grow here and so far Falcom hasn't been successful. Anyway, it's nice to see that there are places for Ys fans other than Ancient Land of Ys and Nightwolve's webpage.

I sit here at my computer desk with the original Y's Book I & II CD and case that I bought back when I first got my TG-16 and the CD addon for it.

Over the years I've lost the TG-16, but I've managed to keep the game disc in perfect shape, and have all the audio tracks ripped to my computer so I can listen to the music whenever I want.

Back in the day I can remember having to pick my jaw up off the floor when I watched the intro animation. I owned a Commodore64 as well, but this was a cut above anything I had seen on there at the time.

Now having just celebrated my 38th birthday, I sit here having already pre-ordered this new version for my DS and I can't wait to get it.

I haven't played the original YS games, as I wasn't into RPGs when I first started gaming, but I have this pre-ordered and am anxiously awaiting its release.

Hearing about the free soundtrack today was also nice, something else to look forward to.

I have to say that Ys I and II is my favorite game of all time. I've played it so much (on the Turbo) that I have most of the narration and characters' lines memorized and can finish both books in less than 7 hours (i've timed myself, lame I know).

I pre-ordered the DS one yesterday but I have to say, I'm a little afraid to see what's been done to it once I have it in my hands. I'm sure it's still going to be good since it is still Ys after all, but still I have my doubts.

The music is so great in the game - fantastic. I've always wanted to find a music CD from the game but there are so many different ones floating around on ebay I have no idea which one is the one with the actual in-game songs (not the arranged versions, etc). Anyone know?

Over the years I've lost the TG-16, but I've managed to keep the game disc in perfect shape, and have all the audio tracks ripped to my computer so I can listen to the music whenever I want.

How does one rip the tracks from the game? Do you just throw it in your computer or do you have to do something else? I always thought you couldn't get the tracks this way, or that it would harm the disc. I know that's probably stupid but I'd hate to mess up my game disc.

Thanks everyone! ;)

I suppose I'm relatively new to the Ys series. I remember strolling through Media Play and seeing "Ys: Ark of Napishtim" for the Ps2 on the shelf. I knew nothing about the series, but something kept nagging me to try it out. I can't even remember what game I was originally going there to buy, but I dropped that and picked up Ys instead. I've never regretted it though. The music, the characters (obviously), the gameplay... There's just something so... fresh about all of it. I found Ys I and II, as well as Oath in Felgana for my computer and just fell in love with the series more. (I even found a set of figurines to decorate my shelf... Kinda nerdy, I know.)

I'm really looking forward to having another US release of the Ys games, and I really, really hope this means more Ys love in the future.

Paranoia Dragon

I too have some Ys figurines, as well as Suikoden figurines, nerdy or not, I don't care:D Also, don't forget to pick up Ys Origin!

Scarleticia: As for ripping music, just put your disc in your computer, & use Exact Audio Copy(google it) & rip the music, however, you'll only get music that is redbook. You can't rip psg, pcm, or adpcm that way. I don't know how to rip those, you need to be a programmer for that kind of thing.

SNES for me with Ys III. I saw the Master System release and liked how it looked but didnt have the system so I didnt bother. I never could find the TG16CD releases either. I didnt play another till long after I'd sold off my SNES copy and bought the Genesis release only to find it was the same exact game. Got one of em for the PC and loved how it looked but could never figure out how to save it. Just wish I could play more of the series.

I personally can't wait for this to come out! Heres to hope they use Soundteam JDK's To Make the End of Battle to bridge the two! (Its an awesome song, every Ys fan has to hear it atleast once!)

I got hooked on Ys when I hopped on my dads PC engine and played book I and II. Since then I've played III for PCE and SNES, and 'IV' for the PS2. Looking forward for some of the fan translations to finish so I can enjoy the rest of them.

I own the anime, and it does a good job on bringing it to life. Bloopers are hilarious too.

I'm a bit undecided about this game. I'm a latecomer to Ys love, but I knew of its reputation long before I actually played any of the games. On a whim I bought Book I for my Sprint phone a few years back, but I can't quite say that affected me in one way or another. The phone was pretty crappy so there wasn't any hope of the music the series is renowned for, but for a mobile phone game it wasn't terrible. Still, I had a feeling it wasn't Ys.
Fast forward to last year, when I managed to get the Ys Complete I + II DVD set while studying in Japan. I do now realize what the fuss is about. The music is quite excellent, and the sprite artwork is gorgeous, and I've become hooked. I'm actually irritated I couldn't get home from work in time to catch the mailman today, as he was supposed to be bringing my copy of the Felghana LE and Sora no Kiseki FC.

I'm excited for more official Ys goodness in the states, but I've heard some pretty discouraging reports about the gameplay of the DS titles (obviously the fault of the original developers, and possibly a consequence of Falcom seldom handling console ports of their games). I'll most likely end up picking it up for the soundtrack CD and to support more English releases of Ys titles. And hey, it's not like I can play PC games before falling asleep in bed at night, so that's a plus right there.

Now about Ketsui Death Label...
I would buy a second copy in a heartbeat if they localized Ketsui DS. </ot>
