Centuries later, a young adventurer named Adol set sail to explore the world and leave his mark on history. During his travels, he learned of the tragic tale of Esteria, a once prosperous island now inexplicably engulfed by a crippling storm. Adol plotted a course for the besieged isle, curious to unravel the mystery...

In regards to this: "Available to North American audiences for the first time, this ultimate translation delivers the most substantial version of the famous Ys story ever made!" Are we speaking about the translation that's new to NA, or the game/s...? I'm not versed in the Ys universe, so I'd like to know if this is the same one/s available on the VC.

This is interesting.
From my understanding, Ys had a remake in the late 90s for windows pc, and that version has more story and stuff in it than the VC and original PC88 version. I'd assume this is version is probably based on that, so that's why theyd claim a new translation.

Holy cats! I think the only Ys game I've ever played was III on the SNES way back when. I've seen the anime based on these games, but I've never gotten the chance to properly play these.
And here I thought P4 was the last game I'd be whoring myself out to you guys for. Here's to being proven happily wrong. :D

These were published by Interchannel in Japan, that's probably why Atlus got them. I hope they tell us more about this soon! By putting both games on 1 cart they've already caught my attention. :D
Thank You, Atlus USA. :)
I'm a big fan of the Ys series and I'm happy to hear these DS games being released officially in English (on a single cartridge, no less, something that didn't happen in Japan). I don't care that I already own the Japanese Windows games which these DS games are based on, since there isn't too much Ys games officially released in English, so I will support you by buying this game.
I'm mostly afraid of the names you'll end up using in the game, but at least all the main characters (Adol, Dogi, Feena, Reah, Lilia, Dark Fact, etc.) seems to be like most of us fans are familiar with.

Huzzah! Thanks, Atlus!
The recent re-releases on the Virtual Console got me interested and now I'm glad I didn't bite on them.

No, I believe the Virtual Console version is an emulation of the Turbografx-CD version with the two games merged into one continuous quest. It appears Atlus has been remade it.

Hitoshura, I don't think I remember you. Were/are you how active member in ALoY forums?
By the way, I'm glad to hear that you like my signature. It was born from frustration when seeing Ys misspelled everywhere online. :D I made it in hopes that less people would misspell the name after seeing it.
Speaking of misspelling: On Atlus' Legacy of Ys website, there's Ys spelled once with an apostrophe. :very_sad:

Looking forward to this. I've been interested in the Ys series for a while and it will be good to start at the beginning.

Hmm, I wasn't too terribly active, I showed up about mid-January freaking out about the Falcom Special Offer, stuck around for a few discussions, and now I just kind of pop in occasionally.
Now if we could just get people to pronounce Ys properly.... hahaha.

Hiya,
I'm a long time lurker, but I had to register to say "OMG THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!" :D :D :D
This news had made me ridiculously happy in a way I just can't describe. I first played Ys back on the Sega Master System and never got to play the second game because the TG-16 CD add-on was too expensive for my dad to buy me. I'm so happy that I'll finally get to see the second game and the rest of the story! :D :D :D It's like I'm going to get to relive a piece of my childhood. ^_^

I'm just glad they're combining the two games onto one cart so I don't have to fiddle with swapping carts. My only concern is if anything will be removed/edited as a result to fit the two games. If not, it really makes question as to why they were released as separate carts in Japan.

Does this mean that Atlus is the owner of the Y's series now? or does Konami still have a hold on it?

Somehow I doubt anyone has exclusive rights on the entire series. I think it's more of a game by game basis though Atlus getting both of the DS remakes does leave one to wonder.
I wont say day one. I just cant do it. That's not soon enough you see, I'm just waiting for pre-orders to be made available, that's when I'll sign on.

OK. So, I've seen these games before, never tried them. It looks to me like I'm right about the pronunciation: "Wise," right? My brother tells me it's pronounced "Eez."
Looks good, though. About how long are the games? I'll probably snag these dia uno.
I'm glad Atlus has the stones to do what they do!

It is pronounced like the word "ease," so your brother is right. Hope you didn't bet any money on that. :)

Okay, I know I might get flamed...
I want to try out Ys, and the two-for-one is pretty strong.
However, Dragon Quest V also comes out in February, and I love the Dragon Quest series.
I can only get one or the other and I'm leaning toward Ys since it's something I've never played before. What can I expect? I know it's an action RPG as opposed to the traditional setup like DQ. So, my qustions...
How long is gameplay for these games? (DQV will give me about 30-40 hours and I like my RPGs to last a while.)
Is it anything like the Zelda series, or does it do a good job of setting itself apart?
I know answers will be biased, but how is the story? If I play a game like this, it's GOT to have a great story. I've walked away from many games because the story was stupid, which is why I like DQ over the FF series.
Thanks for the help!
Also, I just want to say thank the Great Old Ones for the DS keeping 16-bit alive!
p.s. Dangit. Brother's right again...

Why would you get flamed? Those are valid questions... other than the fact that you could easily get your answers from existing reviews.
DQV will get you at least triple the gameplay hours. Ys I+II can probably be beat in less than 6-8 hours (each) when you really know what you're doing. I think I'm being generous, too. You will spend the bulk of your time leveling up and getting money for the next set of equipment.
It's sorta similar to Zelda but there are no puzzle elements. Mostly fetch quests. The plot is hit or miss with folks. Keep in mind most people (such as I) hold these two game in very high esteem mostly due to nostalgia. The soundtrack was mind blowing for the time too. I thought the story was fairly epic personally, if you're not adverse to cliche fantasy anime elements (floating island). The cast itself is pretty big and each have their own traits (Dogi is a good natured numbskull, Adol has strong will) and there are a couple of twists.
It's mostly the addicting old school gameplay that (should) keep you glued to your DS. If you can, get the Legacy of Ys anime DVD (although that will definitely spoil the game)

It's like Zelda.....on speed. It's action is alot faster then Zelda. Link is like a street sweeper, while Adol is more like a motorcycle. I personally love the story, including the entire series(since all the games are connected). One of the main things that people seem to love, is the cast of characters, they're all quite interesting compared to characters in other RPG/adventure games.
