Atlus Brings Ys I & II Back together for North America (http://www.siliconera.com/2008/10/22/atlus-brings-ys-i-ii-back-together-for-north-america/)
Atlus is bundling the two games together to make Legacy of Ys: Books I & II, just like the classic TurboDuo release. However, this version of Ys I & II has been upgraded with 3D graphics, a multiplayer mode, and a brand new translation. Also, Adol uses his sword instead of tackling monsters. Fantastic.
We’ll wait for an official confirmation for an exact release date, but it looks like Legacy of Ys Books I & II is on track for a release in early 2009. Here are some early screenshots of Atlus’ “ultimate” translation.
OMG OMG OMG OMG
(yes I saw the speculation discussion but I think this event deserves its own thread!)
I can't help but think my avatar made a difference!! Hahaha
THIS IS FANTASTIC................... of course I've played these games about a million times each, but I'm just so glad a new generation will get to enjoy them as well. And we're getting a 2-for-1 bonus, too! Words fail me...
DAY MF'ING ONE + will harass all of my friends to get their own copy
BRAVO, WELL PLAYED, KUDOS, MUCH LOVE............
:grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:
Now for the Atlus USA staff who will be reading this: I have some questions!
Who ported the two existing games on one cart? Did you guys finally get your own in-house programmers or did you deal directly w/ Interchannel-Holon?
Are we getting the same exact games or are there going to be bug fixes and additional content for the US release?
Should we expect more out of this Atlus-Falcom relationship? :-o:-o:-o

^I never heard about this game, since you play it before it is good?

Day whenever I get a DS Lite
I doubt I'd actually play this (as I have Ys Eternal), but I will definately pick this up. If just to support this series getting localized.

It is my favorite series ever from my favorite game studio ever; so my opinion is slightly biased. Good is relative. To me both games are masterpieces (CHEF-D'OEUVRES!!), to most people they're "that dumb action RPG where you bump into monsters to kill them, but damn the soundtrack's good!!"
Speaking of which, the (original) soundtrack was composed by Yuzo Koshiro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvpZodHy7qY), who also did the Etrian Odyssey soundtrack, so there's your obscure connection of the day.

First good game on the road to recovery from a lackluster 2008 :D

Interesting I may pick it up. hopefully there will be some kind of pre-order deal before it releases that will make me buy it more. I love being spoiled. :p

Interesting. I've always been on the fence about this series. I've had several chances to play it over the years and have let them all slip by. I'll probably pick it up, like I always do, but whether I'll actually get around to playing it is another story...

On one hand, maybe that's why Atlus have not yet revealed they're doing this game, perhaps they're still trying to figure this out. OTOH, I hope they haven't backed themselves in a corner where everyone expects them to give out bonus items with every single one of their releases. Don't get me wrong, I love bonus stuff and all but I'm in this for the games first and foremost.
*they better give out F-ing chain mails with this*

I swear, I almost imported these a while ago, thinking no one in the US would pick them up. So glad I waited now. But I wonder what the reaction is at Atlus everytime someone else leaks an announcement.

Besides, every time you get really angry, some body ends up "disappearing" from the forums.

You may have already played the better version, depending on any changes made to the NA version of this collection. Well at least they're including them on 1 cart so that's already a plus, in Japan they were each released separately at full price for third party games (5040yen).

Here's my story:
I grew up with both a NES and a Turbo-Grafx 16, so I was already in on the whole NEC thing. I was subscribed to Turbo Play (I still have those somewhere) and the writers were raving pretty hard about this killer new (at the time) version of Ys with music so good, they couldn't put it into words.
So sometimes in the mid-nineties I worked at a game store and managed to scrap enough money to score a Turbo Duo along w/ Ys I, II and III (and Dracula X but that's another story). I still remember being blown away by the soundtrack like it was yesterday, and honest to gawd, I've never been this moved by a game score since then (OK Actraiser is up there too). It helps that the gameplay was particularly addicting as well, for a grinder such as I.
Since then I've just been raving and raving about the series (and Falcom as a company), went back and tried the Famicom and SMS versions of Ys I & II, also Ys III for the SNES (excellent port minus the CD music). Managed to get my hands on Ys IV; Dawn of Ys but never beat it until Nightwolve's patch a couple years ago. Still bummed about Ys V never being officially released (what a game!). Also played the Windows remakes to completion, those were breath-taking.
Of course when Konami translated Ys 6 I went nuts, did my best to force all of my friends into buying copies. I still think it's the best Action RPG on PS2, go out and find it if you don't own it already!! Highly recommended! Then there's the Oath in Felghana, which sorely deserves an official localization, but I guess it's too late for that. Ys Origins is more of the same, which for most people means a heck of a game. I'm just hoping that Atlus USA's sudden vested interest in the Ys series means good things for the recently announced Ys Seven!!!!!
So anyway, I know, tldr, wall of text. When did YOU start playing Ys?

maybe you could move this thread there then, or merge it?
hopefully you guys can answer my original questions.
Furthermore, I'd like to know how long this title has been in consideration?
And who came up with this brilliant idea so I can send him/her a ton of fresh Canadian maple syrup in gratitude?

I was a spoiled kid and had a turbo-grafx 16 with the CD attachment and played through the Ys Book 1 & 2 collection. It's one of the few video games my dad remembers since it was the first game we played that had voice. When I got the Atlus Faithful e-mail about the remake I told my dad "Remember that Ys game with the voices?", and he knew exactly what I'm talking about. I think Ys book 1 & 2 is the only game I've played through more than 10 times.

That means you bought your TGCD + games at Radio Shack since they were the only official distributors up in Canada ;)
Everytime the guys at my local store saw me pop in, they knew they were in for a sale!

I've played Ys Book 1 and 2 on the Virtual Console and Ys 3 on the SNES, and I didn't like any of them. I'd buy a soundtrack because the music IS pretty amazing and catchy, but honestly I just can't stomach the gameplay at all, it reminds me too much of Hydelide.

Okay, so I just decided to merge the two threads since they were so similar. If that bugs you guys, PM me and I won't do it in the future.

My parents would actually take trips down to the US to buy me games (Montreal is 1.5 hours from the border). I can't imagine living in the days without microplay and EB Games and Amazon!

I'm so glad you're picking this up, and that we won't have to pay $30 or $40 for each book separately. this is one of my favorite games of all time and i've played through it multipe times. first book 1 on the sega master system and then books 1 and 2 on the TG-16 CD. The music on the TG-16 CD was amazing, so i'm glad to hear that the music sounds much the same only rearranged, with similar instrument sounds used. there was a sort of house music/techno remix floating around on the net with a rip of the tg-16 CD and it would have been amazing to hear that music. i also remember seeing boxes for Ys 1 and 2 in pc versions.
i'm really excited that there will be new content included.
thanks atlus!

I am definitely happy this game is coming here - and both on one cart too! I just bought the original Ys book for Turbo Grafx last month so now I will just have to make sure to beat it before this one is out =D

Depends on if they give us the option to use the music from the Turbo Grafx CD version, either way, the music is great, but, the Turbo version still is one of the finest.

I fully agree, removing the access to 700+ games is amazingly good to add "me too!" features that very few people care about.
/me is only lacking white to be fully ready for Christmas!
