Mimi told me this in chat.
Futomimi:
you need to throw away the loaf of bread if you get any kind of mold, the mold that grows on bread has long tendrils that you can't see with just your eye, and most likely, they are stretching throughout the whole loaf, even if its pre-sliced bread.

Cheese - depending on the situation I may just cut around it.
Bread - no

It's a waste to throw away food so I would cut around it. and if it looks bad enough I would cut out the best I could and then heat the bread, that should burn away the rest of the small particles. for cheese if contaminated enough I sadly would throw it away.

I believe French cheese is made that way. (it smells really bad)

I'm one of those people that just throws anything with mold away.
One time I didn't notice that the bread I made my sandwich with was moldy until I went back to make another one and actually noticed the mold D:
I couldn't taste much of a difference, though...and I didn't seem to have stomach issues for the day.

If there's mold on bread, I don't eat the bread.
And I love moldy cheese. That said, if the mold is SUPPOSED to be there, I eat it. If it isn't, then I don't.

Cutting around it doesn't work. If the mold is already at the stage of being visible to the naked eye, it's already spread throughout most of it. Unless it's supposed to be there in the first place, throw it out. Always.
EDIT: Just realized that the quote from Mimi above says the exact same thing. Once again, Mimi is not only first but also correct.

It varies on the situation. If am very hungry eat the hole thing, if not remove mold from the cheese and bread.

I generally don't leave food around long enough to get moldy. Either that or I just don't notice it.
I have roommates who have just scraped off/ toasted moldy stuff and were fine after they ate it so who knows.

Toss the bread and also the cheese unless it's supposed to have it (soft cheese, bleu cheese, limburger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese#Blue-vein)). I've sometimes toasted semi-stale bread if there's nothing else in the house. It tastes a bit tart and extra crunchy.

Toss in the trash.
Then again, I'm the type of person who wont use milk the day after the date on the carton.

:agree: You're probably not going to die from eating fungal-infected food, but it sure isn't in your health's best interest either. What's the point of saving food that could potentially make someone sick? There's nothing amoral about protecting your health.

If I die you can bet It wont be from mold. and also realize that many foods and beverages consist of mold materials, so your making a big deal of a material that you might consume everyday.

^Then you will also realize fungus can be detrimental to your overall health even if it doesn't directly kill you.
Consist of mold materials? You could break down the composition of just about anything and draw parallels structurally to something else but it doesn't mean one is safe because the other is.
I'd chuck that crap.
It's not like the starving children in Africa would magically get a meal if I kept the non-moldy part, anyway. >___>

The type of mold used in cheese, the bacteria in yogurt, etc. is a far cry from harmful mold that grows from keeping bread in a humid place or keeping your cheese for far too long.
And you're right, you probably won't die from eating a piece of cheese that had mold on it, but it will weaken your immune system while your body has to deal with it... and if you come into contact with the flu virus, pneumonia, etc., it'll make it much more likely for you to contract the illness. Pneumonia CAN put you in the hospital if you don't catch it in time. And if you get one of the sicknesses that are less serious, like the flu or a bad cold, you might have to take antibiotics to get over it... and the widespread use of antibiotics is contributing to the development of antibiotic-resistant superbugs, which CAN and DO kill many people.
So, in the grand scheme of things, yes, you are hurting yourself and possibly other people by eating detrimental fungus, and the notion of it being more "moral" to eat unhealthy things so as not to waste food is ridiculous. If you're worried about it, you should keep a better reign on when you buy food and how much of it you buy.

There's really nothing more for me to say, since Mimi just covered most of it excellently.
The only thing that I will add is that there are already many people out there with suppressed immune systems, some of whom aren't even aware of it, who could easily get very, very sick or even die from eating food infected with an opportunistic fungus.
I love Mimi's posts!.
I usually just throw out whatever unless it's just cheese and I really feel like cheese. I didn't know about tendrils though!, so I may change that practice.
Olethros

Fun fact of the day: the tendrils are actually called pseudohyphae. :)
