Valkyrie of the Battlefield: Gallian Chronicles is an upcoming Strategy RPG developed by SEGA for the Playstation 3. It is set in the fictional world of Europa, in the country of Gallia, which has come under attack by an enemy nation. Players take control of an uprising of Gallian nationals, dedicated to repelling the invasion. The game's visuals have received a lot of attention, featuring sketch-style cel-shading of such high quality that it has attracted favorable comparisons to animations by Studio Ghibli.

Gameplay
Valkyrie of the Battlefield features a unique turn-based battle system called BLiTZ (Battle of Live Tactical Zones). In-between turns players are treated to an overhead map view, but zoom in to control each individual unit on the battlefield. Movement and other actions are handled in real time, though limited by an AP gauge that varies for each character. This gauge can recharge even during the same turn as you operate other characters. Additionally, players are in direct control of the characters' aim, allowing for headshots and other advantages. The environment also factors heavily in combat. In an urban level, for example, snipers can be sent onto rooftops to eliminate unsuspecting enemies below while tanks and other units can outmaneuver enemy positions via the streets.
Each character in the game fulfills a unique role - for instance, Alicia Melchiott is a mid-range rifle unit, while her male companion Welkin Gunther is a tank driver. There are also a host of other units including short-range machine gunners, heavy artillery, and snipers.

I dunno. I liked Future Tactics. It wasn't anything revolutionary, but it was simple and fun. The multiplayer was also a nice thing to add. Seems like a no brainer, but most games like it don't have multiplayer.
Maybe I should check out some video footage of this game, because I honestly have no idea what it plays like. I just assumed it was a third person shooter.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it too; their really isn't anything like it out there. It certainly wasn't going to win any awards, but with a price tag of 20 dollars on release, it was definetly worth it.

They're absolutely identical aside from few textures and whatnot.
Still, as strong as Call of Duty 4 is shaping up to be in the gameplay department, the most immediately impressive aspect is by far its graphics. The PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions all look surprisingly similar, but that's not due to one platform being the lead; Infinity Ward personally assured us that development occurred simultaneously on all three platforms, and that there wasn't a base system. With that said, the console similarities end when it comes to textures, lighting and resolutions, because those three areas make the PlayStation 3 version definitely excel over the Xbox 360 SKU. Regardless, every console owner will proudly use Call of Duty 4 to showcase their high-definition TV, because COD4 is by far the best-looking console game you will see this year.

A game that looks good, from SEGA!? Its a miracle! The last couple of years have been pretty bad on Sega's part. I mean, look at Sonic next 0 gen, holy crap was it a stinker. The only good games Sega has made in recent years was the Shining games. Shining Tears was awesome, Shining Force Neo was meh, but Shining Force EXA was basically the same as Neo, but was actually good.

From Discovery to Intercepting the Enemy-
Battle Aspects of "Valkyria Chronicles" Reveled
New information was announced regarding Sega's upcoming S-RPG, "Valkyria Chronicles", slated for release on April 24th.
"Valkyria Chronicles" is a simulation RPG which depicts a war-time drama with a fictitious Europe as its backdrop. The human story revolves around Welkin Gunther, an aspiring teacher born in the small country of Gallia, trapped between the Republic and Empire, two long-time warring factions, and the 7th volunteer platoon.
What became clear this time around are the 3 aspects of the battle system: Enemy Search, Target Mode, and Interception. Being a fusion between strategy simulation and action, discovering the enemy (Enemy Search), aiming and attacking (Target Mode), and automatically attacking enemies that enter into your field of vision (Interception), become very important aspects in battle. We'll introduce you to these battle aspects with a mix of images below.
If the enemy cannot be found, they cannot be fought
In this game, you cannot necessarily see all the enemies at the onset of the battle. Enemy units behind barriers, hiding in the bushes, etc, are not shown on the map. Because the enemy unit types or numbers are not revealed, there are situations where you will be at a disadvantage because you cannot take advantage of the characteristics of your units (soldier, tank, anti-tank units), nor will you know what balance of forces to send into battle. That said, it becomes important to discover the enemy and execute an effective strategy. The Enemy Search mode is described below.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_01.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_02.jpg
In the Command Mode where you give your units their orders, undiscovered enemy units are not shown on the map. Only movement sounds of undiscovered units can be heard, and even if you find them once, depending on the situation, you may lose track of them again.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_03.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_04.jpg
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_05.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_06.jpg
After moving your unit and entering the Action Mode, if an enemy unit is in your visual range, lines are drawn between yourself and all the discovered enemy units. This is called the Enemy Search Line. With this, it gives you a much better idea of how many enemies are surrounding your platoon unit. Depending on the degree of danger, the line colors change as well.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_07.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_08.jpg
Battles also occur at night, which reduces your range of vision significantly. Because of this, even if you are at a good outlook, it becomes necessary to approach the enemy units to an extent for the Enemy Search Line to be displayed. As such, it's important to be vigilant.
To Reliably Kill, or All or Nothing
When you hold a weapon in Action Mode, the system progresses to Target Mode. Once in Target Mode, red circles known as pointing marks appear. During Target Mode, time stops, which allows you to aim at the pointing marks and attack the enemy. During this time, the amount of damage you do to the enemy is determined to a large extent by hit accuracy (i think?) and what part you hit, this how you fire becomes important. These aspects are explained below.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_09.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_10.jpg
Once in Target Mode, time stops, which enables you to aim at the pointing marks. Around the mark, there is a red circle which indicates the circumfrence of where your bullet(s) might land and its size is determined by the weapon's accuracy and the unit's firing skill. If you compare the left and right images you should notice the difference in the circle sizes for Alicia who holds a rifle, and Rosie who holds a machine gun.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_11.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_12.jpg
The higher the accuracy, the smaller the red circle becomes, and vice versa. The smaller the circle, more accurate attacks are possible whereas the larger the circle, the opposite is true. High accuracy weapons are generally similar to rifles and are limited to single shots, whereas low accuracy weapons are generally similar to machine guns capable of multiple shots. If multiple shots land, the end result is that automatic/semi-automatic weapons do more damage. Thus, where to aim becomes an important factor in battle. Furthermore, accuracy goes up the closer you are to an enemy, thus enemy units are easier to hit when closer. In addition, accuracy improves as your units level up as well as through R&D of advanced weapons.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_13.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_14.jpg
Aiming points are divided into 3 locations: Head, chest, legs. Headshots result in smaller targets but do a significant amount of damage. Chest shots are easy to hit, but does average damage and are relatively easily dodged. Leg shots do about as much damage as a chest shot and is difficult to avoid, but is difficult to aim properly (I guess there's a separate parameter for your character aiming and the enemy dodging). Changing your targets depending on the enemy's remaining HP and the weapon you're using in Target Mode is the basic strategy in Target Mode.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_15.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_16.jpg
There are times when you fire and miss due to the enemy's evasion. For these enemies, aiming for the legs, which is difficult to avoid, might be effective.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_17.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_18.jpg
Though Welkin typically rides Edelweiss (tank), depending on how the story progresses, there may be times where he is required to join the battle with a gun.
Ambushing Strategies are Effective
In this battle system, it's possible for your units to intercept and damage a unit that comes into field of view. Each unit type has a predetermined intercept range where if an enemy enters, your soldier automatically attacks with its equipped weapon. Generally the intercept range is limited to the area in front of the unit, but patrols can cover a wide intercept range both in terms of distance as well as their flanks. Incorporating intercepts into your strategy, it is possible to do a tremendous amount of damage even during the enemy's turn. Note that snipers and anti-tank units do not have an intercept range.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_19.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_20.jpg
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_21.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_22.jpg
In this game, predicting the enemy's invasion route and placing units for intercepting the enemy is an effective strategy. Player units automatically attack when an enemy enters their intercept range. Thus, it's possible to do significant damange not only during your turn, but during the enemy's turn as well, leading to a quicker resolution of the conflict.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_23.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_24.jpg
Obviously the enemy will try to intercept you as well. To evade life threatening damage, it becomes necessary to take actions such as taking the shortest route through the enemy's intercept range as quickly as possible, or moving from barrier to barrier while taking advantage of the enemy's reload time.
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_25.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_26.jpg
http://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_27.jpghttp://dol.dengeki.com/news/200803/22/val/20080322_val_28.jpg
However, being intercepted by a tank results in multiple attacks and heavy attacks, so don't push yourself. When moving through a tank's intercept range, you need to be prepared to take critical damage. Thus, taking a long way around to avoid this may be an appropriate strategy. However, depending on the tank type it may have an auxiliary gun armed to protect the tank's weak link; the radiator, so quick and accurate decisions are required.

Day one. I'll pay quite a bit for a Japanese quality collectors edition too, C'mon Sega.

There have been instances in the past where GS has put up box art before the final art was done. I'm really hoping this is one of those cases.
How much do these box art guys get paid? I can seriously do a better ####ing job than most of them with a little graphic design/photoshop training.

That looks final to me. I mean, I hate it, it's ugly as ass, but it looks like a final cover. I think that's going to be it.

Sega probably has an in-house art department, and probably pays their employees a handsome $35 an hour for an experienced designer.
But don't go blaming this on the designers themselves. Usually, this is the cause of the higher ups wanting a different look to the game than what it needs. Even if you designed the best box art ever, chances are it'd be thrown out the window so many times 'till you just didn't care anymore.

And that was just a hacked OST thrown in to the regular game case. Glad I never opened my copy, sold it on Amazon for like $100 or so. :) I do not like Shenmue.

The nice thing about patches is that they can fix issues like this. The bad thing about patches is that games tend to be released earlier and a lot more buggy, with the publisher using updates as an excuse for not doing as thorough a testing.
I'm sure there'll be an update to fix this, or whatever. Still sucks, though.

Usually Sega quickly accommodates the demands of its fanbase in Japan. It's been 2 months; they have the patch now, right?

Japan gets DLC in August which includes a Hard EX mode, Free Battle option, and new items. Also "Edie's side story" which has fully voiced story sequences and new battles for an additional 600 yen ($6).

Also, yeah, Vyse and Aika are playable. Fina is also in the game too, as an NPC Medic in one of the scenes of the game.

It could either mean that the art book is packed in with the game, or that might only apply to copies ordered online.
I thought the ost was really boring and a step down from what Sakimoto had done in the past. Maybe I should listen to it again.

I love how Penny arcade keeps mentioning this game. Hopefully that will help sales pick up a bit more.
When I was in Japan at an MGS4 event, I met a guy who works at Sega. We had time to waste and were talking about cool games coming out and I (stupidly) said "Oh! And have you seen the trailers for that PS3 game. . . um, something Valkyria? It looks fantastic!" He smiled at me and said, "Well thank you. I didn't even have to mention our game, you already like it." Haha, forgot it was Sega made. Go me!
Anyway, though I should be working harcore on my NaNoWriMo, I think I might relax a spell and play some Valkyria Chronicles right now! Ta!
