Street Fighter IV (ストリートファイターⅣ, Sutorīto Faitā Fō?) is a fighting game and the next installment in Capcom's long-running Street Fighter franchise. It was announced on October 17, 2007. A pre-rendered teaser trailer done in a 3D calligraphic style showed Ryu and Ken sparring in a dark meadow, but no gameplay was shown due the project's infancy at the time. Although Capcom USA owns the rights to Street Fighter, development has been contracted to an internal studio at Capcom of Japan. Nothing else is known about Street Fighter IV at this time.

Everyone is talking about Street Fighter IV today after Capcom revealed a smidgen of information earlier today. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Dhalsim are confirmed to be in the cast. Fights occur in 2.5D and the first screenshot of ready-for-action Ryu popped on 1up. The rest of the information from Capcom is vague, like “new special moves that go beyond any Street Fighter fan’s wildest imagination.” They haven’t announced which system Street Fighter IV is coming out on either, but considering the quality of graphics it’s probably a Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 title. It would be interesting if it was a console exclusive, but that seems unlikely.
About the sole screenshot… do you notice anything unusual? Insert Credit made a humorous observation about the new Ryu. Give the picture a second glance before clicking over to see what’s “up”.
I know we're going to have some cracks about the screenshot

How can you NOT like it? While it's not at all polished looking, it looks like they took 2D SF and attempted to make it 3D. I'm quite positive the final version will be MUCH better looking, while maintaining this general look,.

EDIT: New info from the January issue of EGM via NeoGAF (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=215633)
-Producer is Yoshinori Ono, who worked on SF Alpha, SF III, and oversaw Capcom Fighting Revolution
-Ono wants it to be the "second coming" of SF II. Wants it to feel like "homecoming" for SF II fans.
-Online play is planned with potential for microtransactions such as new characters and stages
-The look is not really similiar to the teaser trailer. A "cartoon-shaded style that manages to evoke SF II reimagined in 3d"
- runs in 60FPS
- Gameplay sticking with 2D- Ono wants to "preserve the strategic nature of SF II"
-camera doesn't budge
- Trying to get "as many SFII characters in as possible"
- Takes place after SFII Turbo and before SF III
-Controls are traditional- "in its current early state, the game feels remarkably close to Super SFII Turbo"
- Game is more aggressive- more about attacking than defending. Many of the SF III and Alpha gameplay systems have been scrapped.
- Producer says they haven't decided what platforms or even if there will be an arcade version. Version Shane played was running on a P.C
- Ono suggests Capcom could make a PS2 or DS version if "they deem the market suitable"
-Ono not enthusiastic about making it an exclusive- wants to get it out on as many platforms as possible

60FPS really should go without saying this gen. Releasing a game that doesn't run at 60 FPS is like releasing a PS2 title on a blue disc; or releasing a game in SD format. It's inexcusable.

Capcom really ####ed up, not one SFIII character in sight yet either. FAIL.
EvilHero
07-04-2008, 02:30 PM
^ Yeah but they've played on Gouken being dead alot harder than Bison. He was already defeated in Alpha, then came back, i'm not suprised he did it again. Gouken though, Ryu's story was mostly centered around the fact that Akuma murdered him.
I'm really not that bummed about the Street Fighter 3 characters being absent. I remember when 3S first came out, I didn't have much interest in it (or fighting games in general) at the time because the characters were all different. If Capcom wants to sell this game and resurrect the franchise, they need to bring the memorable characters back.
Now if they slip in some Alpha characters, thats a whole different story.

Someone brought up a good point on SRK the other day about bringing back characters from other series.
The game is based off SFII's fighting system, so having to bring back characters that play off different fighting systems would make it horribly difficult to balance.
I could see it in the future with possible revisions or sequels, but it would take some time on the developers part.

^I don't have a problem with the fighting system or what you said, but I am just horribly unimpressed by the graphics engine.
I would prefer straight up sprites, but I am open to poly builds. This looks kind of bad to me -- like it might as well be a new EX title.

It's not that hard to take Alpha characters and put them into SF2's engine. Not at all. It wouldn't be all that hard to take SF3 characters and do it either.

Yeah I do agree, that was my initial impression. I'd still welcome 2D sprites (ala GG or BlazBlue) with open arms. They've made changes to the graphics over time, I think they look pretty good (EX doesn't even compare IMO.)
It's not that hard to take Alpha characters and put them into SF2's engine. Not at all. It wouldn't be all that hard to take SF3 characters and do it either.
Alpha characters wouldn't be as bad as 3S characters since not much had changed from ST to Alpha (aside form air blocks, alpha counters and CCs) of course, Alpha was so flexible that all the fighters had so many play style options.
SF3 on the other hand, alot of the characters were designed with the SF3 system in mind (parries, super cancels, meter length/quantity, etc...) Putting them in a system like SF2's just wouldn't make any sense, alot of 3's characters would play HORRIBLY. Changes to them would need to be done.
Look at what happened to MVC2, you dropped Street Fighter characters into a Marvel Fighter with Marvel mechanics. Thats why the game is horribly unbalanced with pretty much none of the SF characters worth playing.
Gen Eric Gui
07-26-2008, 11:27 AM
Well I didn't say they should just be "dropped in", that would be ####ing terrible. I said it's not hard to adjust them to the new system. Which it wouldn't be.
EvilHero
07-26-2008, 11:37 AM
Balance in Fighting games is delicate, i'm usually not convinced it exists unless you run a loc test (look what happened to SC3....) You can't just simply make changes, you have to see how it works amongst all the other characters on the roster, watch for bugs, glitches, infinites, etc. Then make alterations, and repeat as much as necessary.
Me using the phrase "dropped in" to describe MVC2 might have been a little inaccurate. They did make some fair changes to the SF characters (move properties and such, nothing big or else it wouldn't be believable) but they were still horrible.

Yeah, good thing thats only with O. Sagat, they nerfed the recovery time on his tiger shot afterwards. Doesn't matter considering you can still pick him in the Anniversary collection. Oh well, some of the sickest come backs were against O. Sagat.
I doubt Sagat's fireballs will be a problem in SFIV since you can "parry." That and with the inclusion of Ex projectiles and invincibility frames during supers, most projectile fights won't be as strategic as they were in SF2.
I dunno some EX moves are pretty ridiculous. Especially Ken's EX spinkick. I imagine Sagat's Tiger Uppercut would do a ####load if you connected with all of the hits. Too bad it never happened though.
Eh... I dunno Al.. Ken's EX tatsu was pretty fast. But its a waste of meter to perform unless you can confirm the hit, and if you can combo, you have alot of better options since EX tatsu doesn't knock down. Only time I ever see it used is in the air, usually then it ends up getting parried.
EX shoryus (wether they be Ryu, Dudley or Sagat) are generally only useful during certain situations. I never use them for anti air as all the hits won't land and a regular shoryu is more than suffecient. Only time ex shoryus are good are during combos, during that time you usually have better options (like linking into SA.)
You can do some sick damage on wake up or if your opponent whiffs a throw (it takes some sick reaction time though) that or during one of Dudley's corner juggles.
Unfortunately, I got my ass whooped by a Sagat player (with a 9-win streak), who kept on spamming his projectile as if it were Cable's Viper Beam.
The problem i'm seeing in alot of match videos is that people are playing this like its SF2. Its not neccessarily a bad thing, but theres alot of different mechanics that can help you against characters with a strong projectile game.
Not saying that you should have done something different against the Sagat player you faced, just a simple observation
Gen Eric Gui
08-16-2008, 08:12 PM
Dudley should NEVER, EVER link into his EX shoryuken. There's no point, because nearly everything that can be linked into that can also be linked into his EX Machine Gun Blow, which is way more damaging and opens up sick juggles.
Only time it's ever really useful is on wakeup and your opponent is hovering over you with no super stocked. Which is to say, only against scrubs and poor players.
Edit: as for that last part, they're probably spamming fireballs because that's all most people do in fighters. Average Joe can't figure out how to get around them, so they figure they're the best strategy.
EvilHero
08-16-2008, 08:24 PM
^Yeah, like I said. Generally if you have the opportunity to link an ex shoryu, there are far better options to go with.
Although I believe their is a Dudley juggle that involves using his ex shoryu. Same with Ryu.
Gen Eric Gui
08-16-2008, 08:27 PM
The only Shoryu juggle I know of offhand is that Ken's LP shoryu can combo into itself in the corner for like 1/3 health.
EvilHero
08-16-2008, 08:32 PM
That only works under very special circumstances, or if you Kara Shoryuken. Even then it doesn't do alot of damage, good for meter building though.
The combo I had in mind for Ryu was Ex tatsu in the corner into Ex shoryu. You usually have better, easier to perform options, but sometimes I like to do this for show, or when i'm bored.
I looked up Dudley's, he does have some viable juggles involving Ex Jet upper, but most of them are character specific.
Gen Eric Gui
08-16-2008, 08:36 PM
I remember being able to double shoryu pretty regularly on a couple characters, and I didn't play Ken at all. Maybe I was doing on accident what I needed to do?
And it did a lot of damage.

Pad designed are not final. Prices for the pads should be $40, the 360 pads are supposedly wired while the PS3 pads are wireless...
There will be two different sticks, the regular stick for $70 and the Premium (which uses the same parts are the arcade) stick for $130.

Doubtful considering probably two thirds of PC gamers will be pirating it like there is no tomorrow.
Man those MadCatz joysticks/controllers are ugly, even if they do contain Hori parts.
Kakizaki

^I totally missed the original comments regarding those controllers using arcade parts. I would like to see some real conformation on that -- it also doesn't mean they are assembled well.
Muckamuck
12-20-2008, 07:55 PM
The description for the sticks on GameStop's site say that MadCatz is trying to replicate the arcade-style sticks as best as they can, which involves using Sanwa parts and giving the base a sort of ergonomic slope.
The Tournament Edition one is a little too pricey at about $150 USD, but I believe it's the only one that contains actual Sanwa parts, which on their own are some of the most expensive around. They're highly popular and rather sturdy.

^I just know a lot of people seem to believe just because a company states that they use Happ or Sanwa parts, the end product will be quality. That isn't always the case.
Muckamuck
12-20-2008, 08:55 PM
Yeah, I'm aware of that, and I just wanted to pull up a source of where I read about the parts being used. I'm a bit skeptical about the whole thing as well since I don't have a very good past experience with MadCatz accessories.
Still, I have to give them props for putting quite a bit of work into assembling these sticks, but we'll just have to wait and see.
Kakizaki
12-20-2008, 09:32 PM
^Oh no, it's cool. You just answered my question. I'm in the same position. I've never had any luck with Madcatz junk.
I've just stuck with importing controllers the last ten years -- primarily ASCII and Hori stuff with the occasionally Sega peripheral.

Definitely gonna get that PS3 Collector's Edition. Might get one of those regular sticks...
EvilHero
12-20-2008, 11:26 PM
^ Generally, its the quality of parts that make the stick. Back when we'd make arcade sticks, we'd just make sure we got good parts (Ball top, Buttons, Square gate, etc...)
We would generally care less about the case and what not. Just so long as you ordered good parts and knew how to build a stick, you came out with a pretty good quality stick. Mad Catz made the right move using Sanwa parts, so long as they assemble these correctly (seeing as how a couple of guys with no prior electronic experience could, I don't see how Mad Catz could screw this up) I could see something decent coming from this.
Theirs a couple of guys who are working on the controllers/stick posting on SRK, answering questions, taking suggestions and keeping us updated. These guys have had alot of experience building arcade sticks and playing fighting games and have assured us they're putting alot of focus on quality. Not to mention Seth and Ono are overseeing the development.
Don't get me wrong, i'm still skeptical about this whole thing. But i'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.
On a side note. I'm really excited to see Rose included in SFIV.

Seth shows off challenge mode. This is awesome, they took the best aspect of SF EX Plus Alpha, and threw it into SF4. It was an excellent mode to help beginners and intermediate players get into the game and do the more complex moves and combos. The only reason I still put in the SF EX games. :P

Pretty much all of those alternate costumes have been confirmed since the game first hit arcades. The only new ones are the console exclusive characters.
I'm really liking Rose's. Almost like a homage to the Rogue in the D&D Capcom arcade game, that or Maria from Jojo's.
While I do agree that having to pay for new costumes is BS. It was a much bigger pain in the ass to unlock them at the arcades. You had to play and earn enough in game currency to purchase them. And you needed ALOT of zeni to buy them.
Although apparently you get 5 for free if you get the special edition? That might get me to order the special edition
Getting an hour long movie with the game won't get you to buy the special edition, but 5 extra costumes will?
Gen Eric Gui
01-28-2009, 04:24 AM
Didn't care about the movie. Do care about Sakura in a tiny, tiny karate Gi and Mike Haggar.
And Rose's costume was confirmed to be a throw-back to the D&D Thief.
EvilHero
01-28-2009, 11:39 PM
When did Capcom confirm that about Rose's costume? I haven't heard anything from them regarding any of the alternate costumes.
Fei Long's is pretty nice, i'm glad they didn't use the yellow jump suit.
Apparently they cancelled the collector's edition of the strategy guide if anybody cares. I was kinda looking forward to it for collector's reasons, the guide will probably be either useless at worst, obsolete in a few monthes at best. I'll probably just use it for the frame data...

A cheat guide said finish Arcade Mode with Akuma. In order to fight Gouken get at least one perfect match, use no continues. Get two finishes with Ultra Combos. Defeat Gouken with an Ultra Combo. I don't know if that's right, but you might give it a try.

We just unlocked everyone, then proceeded to play through arcade mode over and over. We followed the guidelines that you had to finish with an ultra combo 1-3 times and get a few perfects, but still it was a bit random.
I've been playing mostly with my friends. I did go online on XBL, racked up a 30 fight win streak under my buddies account. It plays like ST, but the execution is much more solid, like 3S's. I was pulling off Chun's EX Legs into Ultra much sooner than I expected.
I'm still getting used to the new stuff though. Abel's moves don't have much priority and I haven't figured out which normals are decent. The focus attack is awesome, but i'm still getting used to that and FADC's. Rose is also alot of fun to play, but her shamwow isn't quite as powerful as I expected...
I'll see you guys online probably next week. I'll be going to that Gamestop tournament on Saturday, then i've got another tourney to go to on Sunday. Add me when you can, i'd love to play all of you.

Actually, I found out exactly how to unlock Gouken. Basically you have to beat the game with Akuma at least once, then during your playthrough you have to only get the following - no more, no less: 1 perfect, 3 ultra combo finishes. If you get an extra perfect or do an extra ultra combo finish the game will have you fight Akuma instead of Gouken.

That's odd. I had done more than what was required several times throughout the day yesterday and it'd only let me battle Akuma. This was for both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 version.

Nah, its just a random occurence. Kind of like unlocking Ultimate Rugal and Shin Akuma in CVS. Just keep playing through arcade mode until he pops up.

It's not random. The trick seems to be in the exact number of Perfects vs. Ultra Finishers you get. I fought Gouken (before even meeting akuma eveR) the first time with 2 Perfects and 3 UCF's, and didn't unlock him. Then I played again with one perfect and no UCF's, and fought/unlocked Akuma.
Then I went through and got 1 Perfect and 2 UCF's and got Akuma again, then got 1 Perfect and 5 UCF's and got Gouken. There's got to be some kind of sweet spot in there somewhere.
One thing I don't see a lot of people point out is that you HAVE to be playing as somebody who has already cleared the game. If it's the character's first trip through Arcade mode you can't meet Akuma or Gouken.
EvilHero

Heres what my friends at SRK have been doing:
For simplicities sake (it doesn't matter if you only need just one perfect) do this:
1. Unlock all normal six characters
2. Play through the game again and get 2 perfects and 2 Ultras, no continues to fight Akuma after Seth. Kill him to unlock him.
3. Beat the game with Akuma (not confirmed to be necessary, just do it anyway)
4. Play the game *with any character* and get 2 perfects and 3 Ultras, no continues to fight Gouken after Seth. Kill him to unlock him.
Did this at my house, did these exact steps again at my friends. You may not need to actually beat the game with Akuma and you may not need more than one perfect, but the above steps are 100% working.
AKUMA IS REQUIRED. You can fight Gouken before unlocking Akuma and you will not unlock him.

Seriously, thats what makes this game so fun. You have to think of ways to counter your opponents tactics, once you do, it forces him to come up with new ways to counter yours and the cycle goes on.
Ryu's Shoryuken, FADC, Ultra combo is getting really annoying to do. I can do it on pad no problem, its on an arcade stick thats annoying me.

Fuerte isn't a very beginner friendly character, you really need to utilize alot of mind games with his dash moves along with his infinite.
Read through this thread for a run down on some of his moves:
http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=160699
That'll get you started, but your going to need to look up character specific match ups if you want to get really good.
Heres a video of one of the better Elf players:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdmBS7V6DI0
I found this more funny than informative, lil shoto's guide to Elf:
http://www.iplaywinner.com/strategy-advice/2009/2/5/el-fuerte-run-stop-fierce-guide-by-lil-shoto.html
As for Cammy:
http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=168799
I don't play Cammy at all, but from what i've encountered when playing against her, her best range is just outside sweep distance, utilize footsies and cammy's fast back dash to bait out a whiffed poke and punish with a cannon strike or spiral arrow. Spin knuckle works well against fireballs too. Her ultra is also very good for punishing fireball users, got hit from all the way across the screen while throwing an ex kikoken with Chun 0_0
Cammy will take some practice, she doesn't have alot of the tools that make alot of the fighter's effective, so she's kinda low on the tier list (at least for now, anyways.)

It's one of the many things I loved about his character. He's one of the few characters where it's really noticeable if you're a good player or not. There's a lot to learn, but once you have most of it down he's probably the most dangerous and unpredictable character in the game. Screw those wheel kicks though.
Plus, he's as strong as Akuma despite having Leukemia, which is pretty amazing.
I love juggling off of EX Tatsu. It lets me do Yuri Sakazaki-style uppercut combos; even if they're aren't very effective, they're still cool. And it gives Sakura Otoshi a reason for existing, which is nice.

I loved the Gen vs. Akuma intro. I think Gen's the only guy to ever actually block a raging demon. The thing I like most about him is his very obscure normals during his crane stance (crouching fierce that does 1/4 health only on counter hit/crouching short that sends you airborne.) Its a shame they took away his alpha style chain combos and his cancer fist.
I remember Udon killing him off in the comic book, this was before he was announced as a character, of course. Really wrote themselves into a corner there, lol.
Actually got to play some online matches under my XBL tag tonight. I've started playing on best of 5 rounds, 3 rounds isn't enough time for me to get down my opponents strategy. I got to experience first hand just how frusterating a good Sagat player is, i've always just read about it up until now.

I have to say - I kind of misjudged the game, I do like it...but Seth does suck some fun out of the game.

Yeah, I got the standard stick for the PS3, i'm hearing even the TE sticks are having issues though. Mad Catz used high quality sticks and buttons, but it seems like they skimpt on everything else. Tech forum topics talk about wiring and loose washer issues plaguing the sticks.
Mad Catz only has a 60 or 90 day warranty on these. Didn't all the other stuff they sold have a life time warranty? It figures...
I was planning on having Mad Catz fix it, but I think i'm just going to order better parts and put them in myself.

Generally, anything made by Hori. The real arcade pros (usually referred to as HRAPs) are the most common.
Despite that, any arcade stick can still break (my buddy had a Hori that broke after about 6 monthes) if you're still dedicated enough, its like any other piece of equipment used in competition, know how to fix and maintain it. Most of the really good players just order better parts and swap them in.
Some sticks are easier to mod than others. Some are like the SFIV sticks that came out (swappable parts, plug and play wires) while some others require you to take a soldering iron at them. I had a buddy who recently took a soldering iron to his Tekken 5 LE stick, it was pretty cool.
Damn, all this talk makes me want to play some SFIV. I haven't had time in a while, and when I do, i'm usually dropping it into RPGs. Not to mention, UFC Undisputed comes out next week...

I wouldn't buy it.
1. Right off the bat, it uses the U.S style 'bat top' (see what I did there? ho!) I don't know about you guys, my Street Fighter Anniversary Edition stick uses one, and its garbage.
2. The button layout. First, the button's aren't sprayed like a traditional Japanese stick. Second, they have those two VERY obnoxious buttons sitting below the other 6. I can't see how you could possibly rest your fingers on the buttons and not have your wrist come into contact with those other buttons. Even if you can disable them, they're still a pain.
3. I don't know what kind of parts it uses, but something tells me they aren't that great.
4. Too friggin big. 90% of the time, I have to lug my stick to someone else's house to play, that one would be too much of a pain to bring with me. Not to mention, it doesn't look like I could rest it in my lap.
Just some personal observations. If that stuff doesn't bug you, then by all means, go for it.

Way to go Capcom, telling the FG community not only something they already knew, but something they found out.
EVO takes place all this weekend, they've got the live feed up here:

Couple of buddies of mine went, wish I could have went with them. One of them ranks as the 3rd best in Michigan, hopefully he has a good performance there.
Hearing what i'm assuming is East Coast players in the audience makes me LOL.
