View Full Version : First MMORPG I'll play...

I've avoided them like the pest previously, just because I play games sporadically and I have no chance to survive (make your time) against raging NEET nerds who play 24/7. But now that we're getting an English version of a SMT online game, I just _have_ to try it. On a related note, I would also have liked to try Ys Online (my favorite ARPG series) but it never came out here nor does it look all that compelling.
Any advice for an RPG-veteran-but-MMORPG-newb? What should I be expecting, for those who've tried the Japanese game? Are most users total jerkbags like I'm assuming they are?

This will be the second MMO I've tried playing, I'm not really into PvP, so I'll be mostly just messing around with my friends in the dungeons, when the game comes out.
Won't be playing that much cause I'm busy with classes, but if you guys ever need help, just holler.

So... messing with your friends in the dungeon... is that what they call guilds, or clans? I'm serious. I have never ever touched one of these games before. Just about the only knowledge of MMORPG I have comes from watching Chobits and Welcome to the NHK...
I'm hoping we can setup some sort of Atlus team. Only one of my friends is a diehard SMT nut, the rest not so much...

Well we're planning to form a clan, but it's just for fun, nothing really serious.

Some of us PAers are also planning a guild, and everyone's welcome, if it's possible to coordinate it into one giant Atlus/PA/HG101 hybrid.
We're planning on neutral-aligned, FYI.

PA as in Penny Arcade right? and HG101 is just awesome. Neutral is fine with me... hope I can join!

Yep, Penny Arcade. We've got a pretty devout SMT community there, around 20 or 30 of us. Not quite as many in HG101, but more than enough that want to be down with some Imagine action.

I used to be huge on MMO's, then slowed down for a bit hoping to quit altogether. After hearing of Aeria Games publishing this game though, I'm definitely going to hop back onto the bandwagon and play IMAGINE. I used to be a Game Sage for Aeria, and I have to say that the company is great; any other MMO host out there I would be a little skeptical about, but no need to worry with this one.

Has a release date been announced i already read an article in PLAY magazine saying that the game is being translated and i would gladly take up arms and join
this would be my 2nd MMO, my first being FFXI and playing it for 2 years
~,~ but sad thing is MMO take WAY~~~ to much time up so trying to balance play/work/life will be a prob again but i will still play but cut it down to 2-4 hours after work
hope to see most of you guys on when its released

This will be the first MMO I will play as well -- I guess unless you count PSO, which I probably wouldn't.
I think my g/f is terrified.

If I'm going by what Kaki said, this will be the first one I get into full-fledge as well.
Although I was into RF Online for a while.

Does anyone know the PC requirements for this game? I've got a slightly old Mac Powerbook. . . so I'm wondering if I can even play. I'd sure like to though!!!!

Mmm maybe this will get me off EverQuest once and for all?
Hehe probably not but it's definitely worth a shot!

I'll definitely give Imagine a shot; however, I have to admit I'm a little wary of free to play MMOs. They tend to be ridiculous grind fests to get you to pay for in game items instead of wasting several hours of your time to acquire them. I don't really see how Aeria can profit from Imagine without breaking this formula. I just hope they don't go overboard with the grinding.

I'd be playing but my laptop just isn't up to it. Maybe next year after I've saved up some $ and gotten my tech savvy pal to help me build a gaming machine.

Of course you're gonna start with a Pixie. I think there's a commandment written in a lead tablet somewhere to that effect.

I was not always the case...
In Megami Tensei (not the Shin, these games were for the Famicom), there is no Pixie at all. Same thing for Shin Megami Tensei II, but High Pixie is available early on. For MT II and SMT, the Pixie is one of the few demons that you encounter early that you can recruit.
I could be wrong for MT since I have not completed that game yet.

Yeah, it was an FPS MMO. They had an RPG server, IIRC. This was the first one on PC, BTW.

It will be. The only costs are microtransaction stuff, like if you want to buy special in-game items or some such.

Still deciding if I should give the english version a try. It's hard to put a hold on the charcters I have established on the Japanese servers. Would be nice to give it a try though if only to see what changes there are between the two. Maybe even start up a klan of my own and have a charcter built with good skills this time. Wonder if the client will allow for active quad play though. I like running 4 charcters at the same time.

This won't be the first MMOG I will have played, but it will be one of the first i'll likely play with dedication. My first was the Ragnarok Online beta, my second was Rappelz Online that I voluntarily stopped playing because I desired a true storyline. I plan on playing this along with Guild Wars 2.

Its not that hard. Basicly you open each client one at a time, logging in each and once in, start the next untill all 4 are in. Just have the 3 others follow the main charcter and your basicly leading 3 pack horses around. Great for dungeons as it allows you to get 4 of the treasure boxs instead of 1. Sucks if your in a crowded room though as it can get slow.

Seeing as how MMOs in the past have hooked me for at most 2 weeks, I don't think this one will be different for me. But I'll try it out since it's SMT-based.

There is a company called Aeria games who is doing the english translation for SMT: Imagine if you are a fan of the game, and speak both English and Japanese, could you help them out by doing some translations?
http://forums.aeriagames.com/viewtopic.php?t=176274 is the site to contact them, you will need to translate a simple message to prove you know Japanese
i have multiple posted this same message in multiple different websites, and here, and i personally am going to try and learn japanese i already have a webbook on japanese kana, still on the first chapter:(

Kana is easy
the real problem is Kanji
While I do know what the items do with my knowladge (the first is a drink that heals you for 20% HP and the second is a bread that heals your MP by 10%) I can't fully translate it since I lack the knowladge to translate most of the kanjis

well, ive signed up on so many websites today and posted this message, to think i messed up on all of them... laughable. man, i have a kana workbook, but not access to a computer longterm, so it's difficult for me. although many people say that english is the most complicated language, so maybe i've just got to huff it... thanks for looking at it for me, i hope many others will too. Even if i do learn japanese, others won't.

I hear that "English is the most complicated language" a lot since I came to America and I don't think it's true since you have English everywhere in the world it really sinks in
The main problem with English, I find, is the exceptions.
The rules of Japanese grammar are very different from English, which can be off-putting when learning it, but Japanese is in my opinion a lot better at sticking to its own rules.

This will be my first MMORPG too. And here I was thinking I'd be the only one. :)
I was wondering if the Japanese - who are already playing Imagine - will join in with us westerners, or if they'll continue on their own? If it's all going to be one big happy MegaTen family then their characters will be MUCH more advanced than ours. Will this be a problem? If it's going to be all one big MegaTen family will westerners be able to purchase already established Japanese character accounts?
Aside from that, is there a site up anywhere at the moment so we can see what kinds of characters there will be to choose from?

It's a good thing it's free, so I'll probably just try it for a bit just to be able to wander around in a world / characters which are a modern version of the old school MegaTen games. I love the character avatars in this game in particular. But I don't foresee wanting to play it for a long time.
