View Full Version : DS Video Capture

Just curious if anyone knows a good way to get video capture from a DS. I could whip up a way to get sound, but the norm for video seems to be people putting a camera infront of the DS. It's all right if the solution is complicated — I'd just like to find a way to get good quality DS video capture.
Any help appreciated!

What -I'm- curious about is how all these companies manage to get perfect DS capture. I was watching a video about EO2 in Japanese and as the chick was playing it they had a live video capture feed of her screens.

Oh man, I fail. I clicked on General Discussion instead of Off-Topic. Sorry!!! If any of the mods would like to move this topid, I'd be grateful! Sorry again!

I could tell you since I work at Nintendo and know how it is done... but then I would have to kill you since it would cost me my job ;)

Well, if even I did give you a hint, I don't think you want to cut up a DS just to make get one that makes movies.....*walks off*

You might think that. . . but I do have a good old phatty and could probably upgrade to a slim. . . which means I'd have a good old phatty just sitting around doing nothing. . .
PM me if you feel like giving me a hint. ^_^

lol I think that was the hint.
Nintendo makes special units that have AV output, but they only give them to publishers, developers, and outlets that get lots of traffic (1up, IGN, etc). Nintendo is very selective about who they give these units to, so you're not going to get one unless you thief it from GameSpot's HQ or something.
The other option is to cut your DS open and make lots of very technical mods to the DS' circuitry. Someone's bound to have done it by now I guess...but I've not seen someone get the whole shebang working. Usually they only get one screen. I think with the way the DS works, you'd have to code some sort of custom program to be able to capture it, but I'm not entirely sure on that.

Hey guy that works at Nintendo of Canada
my DS randomly turns off these days... sometimes right after booting it. doesn't matter if plugged in or not so it doesn't seem to be the battery.
sometimes it will stay on for hours though.
I read about the J1 and J2 fuses possibly being blown. any truth? is my only option buying a new one? (day one purchase -- warranty long expired)

Well, there's always using a decent digital camera. It's not "quality", but it's not totally worthless either.
With sites like Youtube and the internet as a whole around, though, I do think it'd be a smart move if developers decided to share the game-capturing love with us someday.

I always kinda figured there would be some way to just use an emulator and capture video off the desktop... but I know nothing about the subject. Sorry.

How do we know this guy even works for Nintendo...? And the chances of him losing his job would be zilch... I don't think Nintendo scouts all websites to make sure there emploies don't tell how to use a camera...

Welp, if you wanna go the video camera route, this guy made a nice write up about it.

Not as good as a direct capture but it beats blurry shaky cam stuff that I see too often.

Companies don't get capture from stock DSes. There are things called "Developer Packages" that you can purchase for any given console (starting around 3k) that contain development software for the PC (where the games are made), and special developer versions of the console that have things like USB ports that allow for a direct upload/connection to easily test and make changes to the game before any disk gets written.
There's where you get most of your stock footage from.
As for user end footage? Well. The people who have the money to burn and the right contacts can get ahold of those same non-standard consoles. Apart from that, I know of no way.
