Anjunabeats Worldwide Episode 43 with Mark Pledger
It's the weekly radio show of the Anjunabeats record label (trance/progressive/etc) and they alternate DJs (actualy DJs, since it's dance music) every week. Mark Pledger is the best, IMHO, and is probably the best radio show around, with the exception of A State of Trance.

Tical at the moment. I am about to listen to this new Jay-Z (American Gangster), but I must admit I'm already partically biased against it because he supposedly retired. I don't see why people always say they're going to retire, then come back...
Anyway there is supposed to be some party down town (Chicago) that he will be at that my friends want to go to, but I honestly don't feel like spending the gas money to be like hey look it's Jay-Z...

Honestly, I'm dissapointed in it. I'm a big fan of MV, but it's all kinda been going downhill since Deloused, IMO. The composition is just brilliant in all the songs, and they perform them brilliantly, but it's nothing...special. I'm REALLY dissapointed in the sound quality! It's sooo muddy and poorly EQed. It's so distracting. I mean, this is 2008. There should be no more bad mixes, especially in popular music like this.
Worth picking up? Sure. CD to recommend to a noobie in Mars Volta appreciation? No.
EDIT: Admittedly, it's growing on me. But not there yet.
Futomimi
02-04-2008, 06:33 PM
Honestly, the production quality of stuff doesn't usually bother me. I've been listening to broke ass indie bands recording in garages for so long that I don't even notice stuff like that anymore :P
Did you listen to the first few songs when they leaked or did you hold off until you actually bought the CD? Because I was extremely disappointed when I heard Aberinkula and Goliath months ago, but I started getting used to them after a couple of listens. Aberinkula still is far from being my favorite TMV song, but the other 3 I've heard had (have) me pumped for the rest of the album.
Esoteric
02-04-2008, 07:02 PM
No, I held off. I wanted to be surprised. And when I say that the mix is bad, I mean it in a way that it was meant to be good, but turns out to be distracting because certian instruments, harmonic passages, ect, are brought out or covered up in awful and wrong places. I love me a good indie garage sound band, and this is not that sound. That being said, there are a couple of tracks that really stand out as being pretty stellar. The last track, Conjugal Burns, is VERY good.
Also, I'm not that crazy about the new drummer. He does his job, but that's about it.

One of the few good rappers from the south...
Rammstein - Amour
Rammstein - Mann Gegen Mann
Candlemass - Destroyer (The solo about 3 minutes into this song gives me gooseflesh. Amazing.)
Candlemass - Embracing The Styx
Axis of Perdition - Reflections of the Underdark
Cannibal Corpse - Devoured By Vermin
Nile - Cast Down the Heretic
Behemoth - Ceremony of Shiva
And the opening theme to Final Fantasy VIII. This is by far, hands down the best video game intro song EVER created. I doubt that will change for a long, long time.

The latest Nightwish album. I'll admit, I was skeptical since the lead singer was no longer there. Her opera voice made Nightwish, well, Nightwish. Anyway, I like the latest album but sincerely hope they keep the opera+rock together. Had it not been for the background choir, particularly the lead one you hear on the first track, I'd probably give up on Nightwish altogether.
