I notice it says "local multiplayer only" on that e-mail that was just sent out. Is that for the Wii version as well or just the ps2? I guess we will need a multi tap for four players on the ps2 version unless you can switch controllers or something.

You don't need a multitap to play 4 players on the PS2 version. You can assign any player to any controller. You can even play with 4 players on a single controller, if you want.

Got to admit this is surprising, based on most of the recent announcements I thought for sure this would be the DS version.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this. Hopefully this is good enough that when I go to my cousin's house, he'll want to play this instead of Mario Party... I do have a question though! How can the Wii version be controlled: Wii remote, Nunchuk, Classic, and/or Cube? Also, a lot of motion controls?

I guess Atlus figured this was a game that could be fun for "casual" gamers, so they released a "commercial" that was shot Wii-style.

If you look at the GameSpot and GameFAQs forum, you'll see that some ppl have already picked up their copy of the game! :)
And here's a snippet from the first review (http://ps2.gamezone.com/gzreviews/r35563.htm), coming from GameZone whom I've never heard of before and I suppose should thus be taken lightly:
"Dokapon Kingdom had a lot of promise. It's not everyday that a developer tries to reinvigorate the Mario Party brand of gameplay with a mix of other genres. That's what Dokapon Kingdom tried to accomplish, and while it succeeded in putting the two together, it failed to make either element (RPG or party game) stand out. On the RPG end, it made the gameplay far more frustrating than it had to with a randomized system that shouldn't have been employed."
Final score: 6/10
That whole randomizing thingy sure sounds lame - I really don't mind doing it at the beginning of a battle, but even when a battle continues from where it left off in a previous turn?? :/
Anywho, I'm really excited to hear what IGN has to say about this game. They were pretty thrilled about it two months ago when they wrote their last preview :)

I don't think that reviewer understood battles. Each battle consists of an attack and a defense phase for each participant. The next turn, the battle keeps going.

Also, I'm not sure which RPG or board game that guy's played where you'll have combat and it's not either simultaneous or there's some kind of stat determinant to choose who goes first.
The vast majority of them have something to determine initiative, and Dokapon is no different. It seems like he's mad that he doesn't have an "I WIN!" button.

Yes it does, but what I find weird is that if on my last turn - my opponent got to attack me first because he picked the right card, then surely you would expect me to get a chance of attacking first on the next turn? No?
Why randomize the attack order again when its the same fight that is still going on?!
Also, I'm not sure which RPG or board game that guy's played where you'll have combat and it's not either simultaneous or there's some kind of stat determinant to choose who goes first.
I'd say there are plenty of RPGs out there where the one initiating an attack gets the first hit.
It doesn't really matter to me though. I mean, from what I've read - none of the monsters are moving in this game but they're all random encounters, triggered by landing on a space. How much fun would it be if the player always got the initiative in these battles?? I'd rather have chance decide such a thing and think that whenever I get the initiative - it's because I spotted the monster first. Whenever the monster gets the initiative, it's because I got ambushed by it.

Randomizing who goes first is one of my favorite parts of the battle. It is the reason why you have to be prepared for any scenario. If thieves always went first due to high speed or whatever, magic users would be annihilated and thieves would never have to worry about magic defense. The game combines the perfect amount of strategy and luck for a great party game.
I was playing with my sister and my girlfriend all night, and I had conquered four towns before either had conquered even one. I weakened the big boss down to nineteen points before he killed me with a lucky strike. My girlfriend snuck in and killed him with a cheap attack and took all that gold.
My sister was feeling left out until Weber showed up. We were making fun of her because until then we'd only experienced the joy of Weber's blackmail and giant bug. Instead she gets a contract.
Long story short, by the time I got out of my coffin, all my towns were gone, my girlfriend was hiding in a cave and I had poop for hair.
This is my new party game.

lol, i have yet to get people to play with me since i am home alone for the next 24 hours, but from playing alone, i love how this game is not 100% skill, and that even though u can be stronger, you don't always win. The roshambo is something that gets annoying.. Roche apears way to often for my liking ;P
also a like how eladers, don;t stay leaders verry long, I had 11 townz at the beggingi of the week, by the end i had 7 because of being killed and boss summoning onto my towns, I find that cool because even though you have the most, that jsut meanz more of a cahcen one of your towns get taken over by a purple monster.
anyway, I don't know how long the fun will last, only time will tell of that one, but atlus you have a great game, and i look forward to palying it with actual peopel ;P

Yeah.
The day after I managed to get the one and only copy for Wii from GameStop. I'll be accepting hate mail.
About the game being random, it's not entirely. It uses the RNG system (random number generator). Basically you can save and force wins in roshambo if you want, among other things. Very rarely I've seen something different happen when re-doing something, the only example being a new monster appearing. It might be possible I did something to get a different RNG value. Anyway, this is useful for getting that winning card, first strike in battle, whatever. Oh, don't try to time spins or anything. It uses this system, so you'll just waste time and effort.
As a side note, the computer's selected battle command seems questionable. Certain enemies choose based on what you picked. For example, Robo-Sassin will counter if you strike, but defend if you cast magic or attack. Same deal with Rico Jr. Well, that's what I've experienced when testing with it.
Edit: I've discovered a bit more. It appears certain types will just plain counter a strike regardless of choice. This was tested by playing as a Darkling, telling it to not counter, and having the opponent strike. The Darkling WILL counter. Now there's a good tip for the people who even care to read what I say. (By the way, the Darkling also has a different voice depending on who turns into it. It's interesting, but the face type I like sounds so lame...)
Also on the RNG system, I've been able to soft reset, load the game data, and the value has appeared to be the same. Recently, I found that it appeared to carry it over and I got different things to happen, such as using a store warp and ending up in different places. It appears it may keep or change the value, so it's really confusing. Usually a hard reset will reset the RNG value in games, but I haven't tried that. And I don't really care to either, so if someone else wants to pick this up where I'm leaving it, be my guest.

Wow is this game good! I love everything about it so far. Catchy music, adorable voice acting, interesting classes, crazy events and most importantly; a balance of strategy and chance! I like that I've been able to get just about anyone to play and enjoy it. Some aren't interested by the appearance and premise but after they pick it up that soon changes. :D
It's nice to play something that isn't twitchy like Bomberman Blast or Super Smash Brothers Brawl at gatherings. It's fast paced but presented in a conventional turn-based manner with instructions, detailed descriptions and straightforward goals that could be understood by someone who hasn't played Final Fantasy or Monolopy before.
One thing I noticed, however, is it's not a game for the morally correct. The more cruel and nasty I am, the better I do. If I go by usual helpful nature... I just go down the rankings! Which is why I like the thief; it forces me to play dirty.Yes it does, but what I find weird is that if on my last turn - my opponent got to attack me first because he picked the right card, then surely you would expect me to get a chance of attacking first on the next turn? No?Kind of an old post now, but this is very essential for class balance. :] Besides the mentioned thief, other classes are affected by this. As an example, the whole deal with the monk is if they're low in health and get to go first, they'll probably kill the opposition on a nearly equal gear/level/stat basis even if they defend an attack due to their class ability. However if said monk is at half HP or goes last instead, then the monk will most likely die... though they might just live if they have the right stats. :D

Hopefully all three of my friends will make it on Saturday so we can finally play! After we do, I'll definitely come here to share my thoughts and maybe some hilarious things that went down (which I hope are plenty!)
I'm surprised how addicting this game is! Of course, that might be because I'm currently in first place among my friends, but I doubt it. I'd heard about the "darkness" being able to really mess things up, but to see the extent that it can... wow.

OK so i was still struggling whether or not if i should buy dokapon kingdom or not (for wii) but after a lot of reading and youtube watching i think i decided to buy it....(this weekend)
~what im wondering is.....
1.does your character learn new attacks as they level up?
2.how does the game end? (or does it even end)
3.what the difference between playing w/friends on story mode or battling with each other?
~omfg lol sorry thats a lot of questions but ya...i'd answer your questions so it would be great if u can answer mine!
THANKS!!!!

1.does your character learn new attacks as they level up?In addition to the field skill they start with, players learn job skills as they increase their job level. To my knowledge these skills are always usable on their attacking turn; including Heal. Battle magic, both offensive and defensive, can be bought from the Magic Store, found from fallen enemies or certain spaces.2.how does the game end? (or does it even end)It does! Story Mode is chapter based. I haven't finished it yet but that alone is 15-30 hours of gameplay, and many people have reported enjoying it enough to play again. Normal Mode goes on for how many weeks you want, up to 999. Of course these are virtual weeks; after everyone has had a turn a day passes. Lastly there is Battle Royale. You set an objective (get x number of this or that) and the first one to do so is the winner; this is the quickest of the three modes of play.3.what the difference between playing w/friends on story mode or battling with each other? All that changes with Story Mode is the, well, story! There is no set amount of weeks. All four players work together or against each other for the duration of every chapter. After defeating x number of Big Monsters, a new chapter objective appears. Who ever resolves that chapter objective gets the reward. For example, something can be stolen from the king. Player 1 can go through all the hard work to get it then Player 2 can ambush her, steal the reward and turn it in to complete the chapter, getting all the glory! Less competitive players may want to avoid combat and instead work together and that's just fine but the one who resolves the issue at the end of the chapter, and the one who has the most money in the end, will be getting the credit.~omfg lol sorry thats a lot of questions but ya...i'd answer your questions so it would be great if u can answer mine!
THANKS!!!!Don't sweat it! Atlus forums is generally full of nice people who will be willing to answer your questions and share their opinion. :]

My friends and I had a blast with what we played of the game--and yeah, I used the term Dokapwnd just for you guys :P
Unfortunately, we had to restart because I made the mistake of wanting a 3P/1CPU set-up...she totally creamed us XD On normal, no less! We now have an inside joke with the name Jeniffer--you should have seen what transpired! I actually shed tears from so much laughter!
First, she (CPU was a thief) reached the castle before anyone else (we were playing story mode). When we reached her, she was already leveling up like crazy! Next, she jacked all of my friend's items and sold them! It was so funny, hearing my friend say, "Jeniffer, you little bitch!" as she saw the actions on the Shop screen XD So many other golden moments, too! XD My friend actually asked me to spare him after HE engaged me in battle and lost! I said, "Screw that" and wanted to change his name to "I LIKE KIDDIES," but it wouldn't fit =( (another inside joke having to do with my always telling him he looks like a predator XD). I wanted to steal his items, but he didn't have anything =/ I settled with this AWESOME hair piece that had a bald spot XD Francis X, I think.
All that was with the CPU.
Anyway, I was so desperate to piss my friends off by shouting "Get a 1 [on the spinner]!" and they'd get a one XD Same with "Go last!" on the turn order XD So much fun. Oh! And my friend ran across the thief Risque, but he got caught so she lost a good chunk of her money
When we restarted with just the three of us, we actually knew what we were doing a bit more than before, so we became a little more aggressive. We were in the first area and my friend who was a Thief was two spaces away from me (Warrior), and I screamed, "Get a 2!" because I wanted to kill him XD Lo and behold, he got a two, and lost! He was so sad, and asked me to spare him, since we had just restarted, so I settled by changing his hairstyle--Poo XD Because of that, he didn't reach the castle in time, and was simply teleported to the next area :P
I also had the misfortune of NEVER being able to reach the Weapon Shop! >=( Of course, my two friends would ALWAYS land on it, so it became a small joke...especially when I'd "Grrr!!!" when I was like, one space away XD
Anyway, I absolutely love the game, even though we didn't get far. What sucks is that we probably won't be able to get together as often as we'd like =( But holy crap, this game is definitely fun to play with people in the same room! SO MUCH LAUGHTER!

She should have held out for Darkling. The one who is getting the worst luck is actually the one we all fear when we start a game. AS soon as we see the little bat floating over their head, we all run for a cave to hide in.

Seconding this. Even if you don't get enough dark points to do serious damage, if you're in a high level area, you get TONS of exp without trying just by landing on towns.
The Darkling's "Castle Panic" move actually helped me win. XD

you mean this is a class that opens up later? how do we get it? anyway I really don't think we're going back to the game. she's trying desperately to deliver some stupid holy curry and can never get the spinner right. she must have tried for 10 turns while I was leveling up. Game should have had a coop mode instead, which is what we were aiming to do (equal number of towns rescued, no fights b/w us, etc)

She should have held out for Darkling. The one who is getting the worst luck is actually the one we all fear when we start a game. AS soon as we see the little bat floating over their head, we all run for a cave to hide in.

If one player falls behind enough, a little bat will appear over their head and they get a message saying that they are hearing the dark whispers of revenge. While they have the little bat, there is a chance that a blank space will result in a special contract item. When used, the contract turns them into the ultimate badass: the Darkling.
Of course, if you were trying to work together to beat the monsters, it probably wouldn't have helped. The point of the Darkling is to bring everyone else down to your level while earning ridiculous experience. The game is definitely, definitely not made for co-op; so probably not for you.

This game should've been WiFi compatible for Wii. The CPU is pure evil and never gives you a break.

I'm getting this game for a sleepover on Friday. I think everyone will have lots of fun with it. ^^
I want to thank Atlus so much for porting this game over. I was so close to importing it, and that would've been so frustrating for me since I can't read Japanese.
While I was babysitting three kids on new years week, I popped in this game and had fun being evil. I killed the oldest kid, 9 years old, and named his character Hannah Montana. He cried. He hates Hannah Montana. So I killed him again and named him Miley Cyrus. Fun times.

I finally got Acrobat, and holy crap it's awesome! It even helped me avoid something rather unpleasant (it resurrected me after a Blackmail activated on my turn) .
I'd like to see what Hero's like, but it takes so loooong!

My girl loves this game I have to play it with her atleast once a day if I can, we are on week 87 and still going man she didn't even like Mario Party this much. Great job Atlus for making my girl a half-gamer now if only I can get her to play more games.

I got this game about 3 weeks ago....And me and my roomates have been like playing it every other day and we've enjoyed trying to destroy one another or taking towns and stuff from one another. Definately makes things interesting and can at times cause those little play fights or occasional cussing..hehe good game in my opinon ^_^

This is what I love about Atlus they can make crazy ass ideas work. When I first saw dokapon kingdom I was iffy so I invited some friends over and rented it and after playing well into the next morning and waking up around 2 pm I decided to go pick it up.
One complaint I have though is that damn item store clerk rock paper scissors just isn't enough to quench my hatred for her.

I love playing Dokapon with my sons, individually that is. I just learned my lesson the hard way: sibling rivalry is horrifying! I even had to "ground" one of my kids! ;)

My friends and I are loving this game so much! After our initial interest upon seeing it at GameStop about a month or two ago, reading the posts about it here really sealed the deal and I went to pick it up on Thursday since there was a used copy. We played it for hours and I can guarantee this will be the first thing we play over the course of the next few weeks/months, depending on who else plays with us! It's fantastic!
I actually just wrote up a post on my blog about it, check it out if you have the time! (shameless self promotion, I know)

Does anyone have tried using the usa release of the game on a pal system?
Without having so much as a release date, or indeed which publisher will handle the release, importing the game starts to sound like the best solution.
If anyone knows wether the game works normally on a pal wii, I'd be most happy to know.

US wii games don't run on EU systems without modification.

Does any one know how to turn off the music? All the other sound effects are good, but the music is always the same...

Warning! *spoiler alert*
I love this game, my friend lost interest, the only problems we had were that there is no randomization and the spinners are all just for show. the classes are great the monsters are good leveling up is a blast.

Hi guys, why do you think Atlus hasn't been more proactive in pushing this franchise. My whole family thinks its the greatest game ever. I'm an old gamer and even I have a hard time remembering multiplayer games that we enjoyed as much.
I see it as more of an RPG than most of them without all the drama. You define your own character in your mind and how you want to approach the game. Some people just go all out for strength with the Warrior Class whilst my brother and I started from the Thief side. We played through the full story twice and I won both as a Monk and then as an Acrobat.
Really, instead of that DS abomination, how about if we get a new one on the Wii. 4 players is really great. I'd buy it for $50 any day any time.

We're not the developer, or one in general, so making a sequel happen doesn't fall within our control.

A new dokapon for 360 or wii would be amazing. My family and I have so much fun with this game that its a shame that its taking so long for a sequel.

Sting. Write your letter in Japanese if you want to have any hope of it being read. And make sure to include enough postage!

It's digging dead stuff up, but I just got it this Christmas and I love it :D (yeah, it's not localized by Atlus in Europe, but nevermind)
I suck horribly, but I love it. Played it with my brothers and hell, my lack of luck is striking again - we played (not knowing much about the game) 20 weeks, of which it took approximately 15 weeks (and ~10 weeks with a bat above my head) to become a Darkling - so I made every empty space become a Darkling space on which they have to fight me, closed the remaining spaces and summoned new monsters on all towns.
Well, I hope I don't have to add that the others were dead during that time. (money thrown away, weapons lost and names changed)
Still, I lost despite that, because .. well, I'm unlucky as hell :)
I can't manage to get to towns (takes 5-10 days just trippling around them), lose turns, because I get a 1 two times in a row on paralysis fields (on which I lose another turn, because my hit doesn't connect) - and stuff.
While our lucky pig just keeps farming :P
Still, I was impressed at how you can get unlucky - it's great to always carry a big bug with you , to get a few blackmails and and and.
I'd play it again anytime :) (don't ask me why I'm not bothered by all my misfortune)
