I love real sports, but hate modern sports games. I am looking forward to this. I kind of miss games that had fantasy / made up sports teams. I would love to see a new Baseball Stars similar to the NES ones (not so much like the NG ones).

Same. I never saw another Tecmo Bowl coming. Now only if EA would make another Mutant League game...

^Yeah, I was talking about that with some of my friends the other day while playing Super Dodgeball.

I have fond memories of Basketball Nightmare:

Have you tried Konami's Power Pro Kun baseball game series? (MLB Power Pros in the States)

To me, it's the epitome of sports games, hitting the perfect balance of realistic and arcade gameplay, as well as thumbing its nose at the American tendency of "omg it has to look photorealistic."

I wanted to try it, but I wanted fantasy teams. Kind of silly, I know.

It isn't silly at all. I find that nowadays, developers of sports games try to get every detail about a team/player/league as exact as possible, without really putting much thought into the gameplay. Most sports games are unbelievably exact and anal when it comes to stats and rosters, yet are loaded with bugs, and have many gameplay loopholes and exploits.

[edit] Actually, I seem to remember older sports games having gameplay exploits as well. Tecmo Bowl being one of them. My bad.

I want to develop my own players -- kind of like the NES versions of Baseball Stars.

I actually like fictional sports. Not just teams, but games that are developed, making a new sport in the process. I remember having so much fun with titles like Rocket Jockey and Hyper Blade. Developers tend not to do that so much anymore, and it makes me a bit sad.

I still have an itch to play Speedball.

Definitely not silly at all. There is a lot of fun to be had with fantasy teams. I do wish Power Pro series had fantasy teams to play against. The graphic style easily lends itself to some wacky teams.

For the record, the Japanese version I played does have some unlockable fantasy teams, but they are mostly the scrub teams that you play against during the Success Mode (the create-your-own-player story mode). The game's focus is clearly on actual pro baseball teams. Of course, you can create your own fantasy team by creating the players through the Success Mode. My team has Jack Bauer on right field, Sergei Smirnov (from Gundam 00) at short, L (from Death Note) on the mound, etc. He has a nasty knuckle ball, that L.

That was a great game Kaki. I sunk many, many hours into that one.

Not yet; I'll be picking it up soon though. Trying to get my twitch back slowly.

Best Tecmo Bowl team name, or best team name ever?

New England Gunners? They could give us something better than that. :(

I like that they went with a large selection of teams.

Anyone pick this up or picking it up? It has been years since I have purchased a new sports game. I love sports but haven't been into sports games for about 10 years - they have become too complex for me. I really want this but I want to play with others. However, I don't think most of my friends will get it. :/

I've yet to pick up NHL 2K9 for the Wii but that's the only sports game I'm getting this year.

Oh wait, super dodgeball brawlers counts, right ;)

Well, I got SDB but I guess I don't count that.

I would like to see a EA NHL title on DS in the same mold as NHL 94 but maybe with deking, some other moves, and improved AI (to avoid ridiculous and constant off sides).

DAMN IT I have been thinking the same thing for as long as I've owned a DS. With the dual screens this would be perfect too given the rink's layout. It's a real shame/wonder no one got on that already.

I have even complained about this on Peter Moore's blog!
