According to the manual, pilots don't die, they just go down in rank, but do units not expire even though they have been destroyed on the battlefield?

I was wondering the same thing, if destroyed units regenerate after a mission, or if they're gone for good and thus there is a need to 'stand up' a new unit. Today (Friday) my goal will be to get a definitive answer to that.

If you mean your ships, they get repaired at the end of the mission. I've lost ships and forces in battle, and both were rebuilt just fine after the battle ended.

As far as I can tell, the only penalty for losing units other than your flagship is that you don't get as many points for clearing the map and that your pilot's skill goes down a rank.

yeah i agree with gen eric that's the only penalty.
