The unfortunately average rebellious teen happened to be in the wrong place at the right time (or is that right...wrong...whatever) when the Professor's space ship was attacked.

In a way, the power cell that fell out of the Professor's ship is what brought the two together. Terry would rather just go home, but he agreed to help the Professor out for a bit.
